This may sound like straight out of a murder mystery, but in a shocking turn of events, 6 tourists were found dead at the Grand Hyatt hotel in Bangkok, Thailand. As per initial reports, it does seem like the deaths were caused due to cyanide poisoning.
Grand Hyatt Hotel: 6 tourists found dead
Out of a total of 7 guests, one guests was missing and 6 dead bodies were found inside the suite at the Grand Hyatt hotel Erawan Bangkok. When police investigated the matter, they found cyanide traces in the bodies of all the people deceased. Police found the residue on the tea cups present on the table.
“We would like to confirm that one of the six dead caused this incident using cyanide,” Noppasil Poonsawas, deputy commander of investigations at Bangkok’s Metropolitan Police Bureau said at a press conference. “We are confident one of the six conducted the crime.”
Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin told reporters on Wednesday that the US Federal Bureau of Investigation had joined the investigation, as two of the six dead guests were American citizens.
“Someone wanted these people dead,” said Thiti Saengsawang, chief of Bangkok’s Metropolitan Police Bureau, noting the suspicious “residues” found in six of the tea cups. “But we are waiting for forensics to prove how.”
The locked hotel room, the untouched room service, and the missing seventh guest have only added to the mystery, sparking a frenzy of speculation on social media – only heightened by erroneous early reports that the six had died in a shoot-out.
The Pundit’s Mantra
At the moment, the Royal Thai police and the FBI are partnering together on the investigation into the murder.
Thai politicians, including the Prime Minister, are going out of the way to assure tourists that this incident at the hotel was an isolated incident, promising a thorough investigation into the matter. This setback comes at a time when the Thai government is actively trying to shore up its economy by attracting more international tourists. Many in the local tourism economy fear the damage that this may cause to Thailand’s reputation as a safe destination for international tourists.
