As Chase refreshed the Chase Sapphire Reserve card back in June, Amex countered by announcing news about the upcoming refresh to their premium cards, both consumer and business versions of their coveted Platinum card. As per Doctor of Credit and Reddit, the Amex Platinum card may soon be getting more coupon like credits after the refresh on Sept 18th.

Rumored new Credits on the Amex Platinum Card

As per the rumor, following are the two new credits that could be added to the Amex Platinum Card after the refresh on Sept 18th:

  • $400 in Resy Credits (this could likely be split bi-annually, but there’s no confirmation yet)
  • $300 in Lululemon credits (rumored to be $75 per quarter)

In case you haven’t been following along, I’ve also written this post which summarizes some of the confirmed changes in addition to some of the rumors that we’ve heard about ahead of the big refresh to the Amex Platinum Card.

If these rumors are indeed true, then I’d say that would be a net negative for me. Over the years, I’ve written about how card issuers have jacked up fees only to offer ‘benefits’ with partner brands. While the Amex Platinum Card may have a fee of $895 going forward, I’m unsure that any of these brands really qualify for or fit into any ‘premium’ category, similar to the current Walmart benefit on the card.

The Pundit’s Mantra

In contrast to these new benefits, I still find the new Fine Hotels and Resorts (FHR) benefit more useful. Firstly, it’s a purely travel related benefit. One of my biggest pet peeves with Amex’s changes has been this whole shtick about moving from travel focused cards to more ‘lifestyle’ focused offerings, which basically means shopping related credits.

Secondly, for my pattern of travel, I book with FHR at least two times a year anyway. Bumping that credit up to $600 per year actually works pretty well for my style of travel.

What do you think about these new coupon like credits that may be added to the card soon? If these turn out to be true, would you be looking to renew the card or cancel it once the fee is billed again? Tell us in the comments section.
