It’s not often that a pilot bakes cookies for the passengers, but this happened on Australia’s Rex. The airline is currently in administration, after financial losses due to a foray into Boeing 737 jet services.
These flights went up against the incumbents, Qantas and Virgin Australia and were loss making. For an airline that primarily operated the Saab 340 on regional routes (Rex = Regional Express) it was a big step up and one a bit too much for them.
A Pilot Bakes Cookies
When Ansett Airlines went into administration in late 2001, it was eventually decided to combine two of its money making regional subsidiaries. Hazleton Airlines and Kendell Airlines became Rex in 2002.
It seems that the pilot flying a friend of mine recently happened to be working for the airline back then. Since he had been through administration before, he came prepared.
People who work in aviation really are something else when it comes to times of strife. They tend to selflessly step up to the bar and make things as good as they can be.
Overall Thoughts
While Rex is in administration, hopefully the regional operation will survive again, just like it did all those years ago. With great people like the pilot who bakes cookies, I daresay the airline has a chance.
It is never good when an airline goes down, as a lot of people and communities are impacted, one way or another – especially when it is an airline serving rural communities. Fingers cross all goes well for Rex from here on out.
