Background and Location
During my Amsterdam trip in the summer of 2025, I stayed two nights at the Sofitel The Legend Grand Amsterdam. I’ve been pretty familiar with the brand over the years, but never personally stayed at a Sofitel, so I was excited to give a Sofitel a try. On this particular trip, I stayed at both the Sofitel and the new Rosewood Amsterdam.
Having a Legend designation makes this Sofitel particularly special. There are only 6 Sofitels with Legend in the name. The Sofitel Legend The Grand Amsterdam traces its roots back to the 1400’s as a medieval convent, later serving as royal lodgings, hosting a royal wedding, and the Amsterdam City Hall. Following extensive renovation in 1992, the historic landmark was converted into a luxury five-star hotel.
I found the Sofitel The Legend Grand Amsterdam to be in a great location. It’s strategically located in the old center of Amsterdam, and on one side, you’re near the Red Light District, and on the other direction, you can avoid the crowds and have a more peaceful stroll along the canals.
Takeoff Points
Pros: Polished service, excellent location, and a solid breakfast.
Cons: Some finishings could use some touching up, particularly the bathroom fixtures and hardware.
Takeoff Point: Overall, the Sofitel excels with its location, excellent service, and comfortable rooms. Improvements to some furnishings and fixtures can be made to bring them to pristine condition. I would definitely stay here again when my travels bring me back to Amsterdam.

Arrival
The Sofitel Amsterdam has an impressive porte cochere, and it makes it feel like you are entering a palace. This is especially unique and hard to find in Amsterdam, with other luxury properties like the Rosewood Amsterdam not having proper entrances for seamless car drop-offs.

We were quickly checked in and escorted to our suite. The lobby was nice and spacious, with a beautiful flower display.

Prestige Suite with Canal View
The Prestige Suite at the Sofitel Legend the Grand Amsterdam comes with butler service, and the suite is approximately 55 m2, or 592 square feet.
As you enter the room, there is a walk-in closet on the left. There are numerous hangers, an umbrella, robes, and even a yoga mat with 1kg weights. A safe, complimentary shoe shine bag and laundry bag are also available.

To the left, there is a half bath, which is immensely helpful. The only odd thing was that it only had cold water.

Then, you enter the living room, which has a great, large built-in luggage rack that can fit a carry-on & medium checked luggage.
A large purple sofa looks out across the canal, and there are some nice Dutch houses to look at. There is a television, and the remote control is impressively sturdy. The sofa also converts to a queen-sized sofa-bed, and as far as sofa-beds go, this one was very comfortable and felt solid. Too often, the sofa beds are too springy, but this one was not. There was a desk with a chair to the right.

The views over the canal were nice.

Bedroom & Primary Bathroom
Then, to the left, is the bedroom area. Two sliding doors can close off the space from the living room.

Here, there is a nice sofa at the end of the bed, and a large king-sized bed. Though perhaps they should position the bed a bit closer to the bathroom wall, as the curtain side was a bit narrow.

The bathroom is to the left and quite large. There is a beautiful soaking tub that’s perfect for bubble baths in the center, and double sinks on each side.

There is a separate (large) water closet, and a stand-up shower with both a rainfall shower and a wand. One missing feature was that hand soap was only available at one of the sinks.

The bathroom uses toiletries from Diptyque, and there are plenty of amenities provided in the room, such as cotton balls/swabs, a sewing kit, a comb, a shaving kit, a toothbrush kit, a shower cap, and more. There is a scale as well. The only note was that the granite at the sinks was quite scuffed.
Two other inconveniences included the living room curtain being a bit broken, as well as a lack of power outlets, but the latter is more understandable for such a historic property.
Dining
Breakfast was amazing at Restaurant Bridges and included in my stay. You could choose from a buffet array as well as order from an à la carte menu. All the dishes were tasty, and the service was very polished. I really enjoyed my breakfast experience at the Sofitel.

Restaurant Bridges also offers lunch & dinner, with multi-course meals offering fine French dining.
Other dining options include the Oriole Garden Bistro, serving Mediterranean cuisine, and the Library Or, for afternoon tea. The Garden Terrace offers a nice al fresco drink or meal in the beautiful inner garden of The Grand, and the Flying Dutchman offers a cozy Dutch pub vibe.

Amenities
There is a small fitness center in the spa, as well as a small indoor pool. The spa offers treatments, as well as a sauna and steam room.

One of the cool features about the property is the 600 years of history. Daily at 11 am, they have a Legendary Tour where a guide takes you around the property and explains the historical significance of the property. It was nice to learn all about the history of the property.

The Verdict
Overall, I had a great stay at the Sofitel Legend The Grand Amsterdam. The service is top-notch, breakfast is great, and rooms offer a comfortable experience.
