For a weekend getaway with my friends, we decided to visit San Diego. Rates for a Saturday night in the city were quite the pretty penny, so it was quite the adventure seeking an accommodation of good value.
Behold, the University of California Rate:
Rates at the Sheraton San Diego Mission Valley were $283 a night, but after adding the UC Rate, the rate dropped to $169! My friend is still a UC student so we could use the rate! The rate also included parking ,normally $27, yikes! Tip: check if any groups that you’re affiliated with to see if they offer special rates, many big employers have group or corporate rates.
Arrival:
The lobby has been newly refreshed and I was quickly checked in by a friendly agent. There’s a small sundries shop in the lobby as well as a full service restaurant, Cru Bistro, that also has a coffee shop section.
The Room:
The room was nicer than the pictures on the hotel website which was a surprise! The TV and desk area all had modern furnishings, and USB ports and chargers were sprinkled across the room for easy access. The beds and pillows were quite comfortable as well.
The bathroom was on the smaller side, with not much counter space on the sink vanity. Unfortunately, the shower/tub combo had a drainage issue and it was quite annoying how water would build up during a shower.
A mini fridge was provided in the room, as well as a Keurig Machine with capsules and tea bags. Room service was also available.
Many online reviews complained about noise from the freeway next to the hotel, but in our room on the 6th floor it wasn’t bad at all.
Overall, the room was quiet and clean and a solid 3.5 star hotel room.
Amenities:
I was able to use the swimming pool during my stay, and it was an adequate but small pool. There was also one jacuzzi. It got the job done, but oddly the pool towels were small, pretty old, and ripped. Looked more towels you would see at a 1 star motel…
Location:
The location is great, just across the street from the Westfield mall, and the luxurious Fashion Valley Mall is only a mile away. The hotel is also very convenient to downtown San Diego, which is 5 miles away. It’s a great base to explore the area.
The Verdict:
Overall, the Sheraton Mission Valley San Diego served as a solid base to explore San Diego for a weekend getaway. The clean rooms and comfortable beds provided for a good night’s rest to explore the day ahead.
Happy travels,
Ty
