Background and Booking
For my flight back to New York from New Orleans, I wanted to make the most of my day, so I was searching for an evening flight. I ended up choosing the best-priced one, which was a Delta flight to LGA. I could have booked the JFK flight that was leaving at around the same time, but LGA would be more convenient for a rideshare. Due to a delay, I ended up on the JFK flight (and I am so glad I did) as you’ll read below.
Flight Details
Delta Air Lines Flight 1387
New Orleans (MSY) to New York (JFK)
Aircraft: Airbus A319
Seat: 23C (Aisle)- Main Cabin
Scheduled Duration: 2 hours 39 minutes
Date: January 2025
Check-In & At the Airport
At online check-in for my LGA flight, it was showing an upgrade to Comfort Plus for $23. I considered it so that I would be one of the first off the plane, and wouldn’t have to risk gate-checking my bag. But, as I made it to the checkout screen, someone must have taken it, as it errored out. Ended up for the best anyway, since I didn’t end up flying on that flight.
While in the Uber to the airport with my friend who was flying to Los Angeles, also on Delta, she got a text that her flight was delayed 10 hours until the next morning. Yikes. And the link they sent her for an overnight hotel voucher had no hotels available. I wasn’t impressed by how Delta handled that for her, as a red coat agent at the airport told her she had to use the link, and they couldn’t help her get a hotel, while a customer service agent on the phone said that she could book something on her own and request reimbursement. Confusing. So, she booked a hotel out of pocket. After her flight, she sent Delta a request for reimbursement, so we will see what they say, or worst case, she can use her card’s trip delay reimbursement.
The Last Minute Delay & Run to a New Flight
My inbound plane finished deplaning right before my scheduled boarding time for my flight to LGA, but then, right at the boarding time, the gate agent announced that, unfortunately, our pilots timed out, and they would need to get a crew that was coming from Atlanta. So, they delayed our flight 3 hours, and the flight ended up landing at LGA past 2:30 am. Not sure how they didn’t know the pilots were timing out a bit earlier?
I did not want that, especially with work the next morning. Thankfully, I remembered that there was a flight to New York (JFK) on Delta that was scheduled just 4 minutes after my original flight time. I checked the app, no delays, it seemed. So, I ran to the gate, saw that there were 17 seats left on the screen, and asked an agent to put me on that flight.
Thankfully, I got a seat, and it was an aisle as well. Phew.
Overall, slightly annoyed but glad I was able to make it on the JFK flight. So glad I was team carry-on for this weekend trip and didn’t have a checked bag, or it would be too inconvenient to switch. Still curious why they waited until the last minute to delay my LGA flight…
The Cabin: Delta Air Lines A319
Our aircraft was a 23-year-old A319 that was originally delivered to Northwest in 2002 and joined Delta’s fleet in 2008. You would not have guessed when stepping on the plane that it was that old!
Delta did a nice job with the interiors, and the seatback screens are nice and responsive, with plenty of tv shows, movies & games. A USB-A port is in the IFE screen for charging, or there are power outlets underneath the seat in front, in between the seats.

Legroom was adequate, and we left the gate about 10 minutes past our scheduled departure time but took off very quickly, just 10 minutes after leaving the gate.
The pilot let us know that the flight would be pretty quick, just 2 hours and 10 minutes in the air, which would get us to New York a bit early.
The beverage & snack service occurred after reaching cruising altitude, and I got a small bag of Sun Chips and a Ginger Ale. No full can like my flight to New Orleans on United, though.

The complimentary Wi-Fi for Skymiles members worked pretty well, and it made the flight go by quite fast. We ended up arriving at the gate 10 minutes early, which was nice. 3 hours earlier than when my LGA flight would have landed.
The Verdict
Overall, the Delta Air Lines A319 was a nice ride with a solid seat-back IFE system and complimentary Wi-Fi. Though the delay on my original flight was annoying, I am grateful that I wasn’t my friend with the overnight delay. I’m not sure if Delta had a scheduling issue that day, as there weren’t any widespread weather issues on the day of our flight.
