Review: Poor service and cold food at the Clubrooms Lounge in Birmingham Airport

The Clubrooms Lounge at Birmingham Airport is operated by the well regarded No.1 Lounges brand. Clubrooms are the premium offering, with table service instead of a buffet, and a restriction on children under 12 from entering.

I was flying from Birmingham to Glasgow with easyJet and decided to book this lounge. It ended up being £45 each after a 10% discount I gained by joining their mailing list.

Clubroom Lounge Design

The lounge is located after security opposite the gates. Once you’re inside, it is a well designed area, broken up into various different spaces to suit different sized groups.

What is utterly bizarre is that it has views over the airport, but the bottom half of the window is frosted. This means when sitting down you can’t see out, which really defeats the purpose of having the windows at all. Mind boggling!

Service and Food

When we arrived, we were given menus immediately and then scant moments later asked for our order. When we said we needed some more time, we were then forgotten about. To be fair the lounge was packed with the morning rush. In the meantime, I headed over to get one of the self service options, croissants or a pain au chocolat.

There were no croissants left and so I had one of the three sad looking pain au chocolats remaining. It was awful and dry. Still, it took the edge off until eventually we were seen and placed our orders. It then took another inordinate amount of time for the food to arrive, and when it did, it was cold.

Famished, we ate it all anyway and sat around chatting. Self-service drinks included water, juice and coffee so we helped ourselves to those. We ordered one alcoholic drink each – I had their signature prosecco cocktail – which was lovely.

A good two hours into the visit and near their change over to lunch, they finally re-stocked the croissants and pain au chocolat selection. I also fancied something else to eat and a server eventually came by and I ordered a porridge. That was never delivered.

Overall Thoughts

There is no way I would ever pay for this lounge again if this is indicative of the service offered by Clubrooms. While I understand the lounge was busy and that there were groups asking for lots of drinks, we were there for three hours. When the lounge became quiet, the staff were nowhere to be seen either. Don’t get me wrong, they were friendly and obliging, just never around.

Placing an order and not having it delivered is inexcusable, especially as there was the guts of an hour before we had to leave. Almost as unforgivable as being presented with a breakfast that was almost cold, really. I’ve not come across such a poor experience in a lounge in quite a long time, so you can rest assured I won’t be paying for Clubrooms anywhere anytime soon.
