Airline seating is often a topic that invites a lot of discussions, eventually turning interesting if not heated. As per this New York Times piece, plus size passengers have seemingly turned on Southwest Airlines, now accusing the airline of fat shaming them.
Southwest Airlines Policy Change Triggers Allegations
Back in January, Southwest scrapped a long-standing policy that allowed larger passengers to either purchase a second seat and get a refund later, or be offered a complimentary extra seat at the gate if space was available. That policy made Southwest a genuinely differentiated option for plus-size travelers. It’s gone now.
Under the new rules, passengers who “encroach” on a neighboring seat are required to purchase a second seat in advance. If the flight isn’t full, they may get a refund. However, if they’re buying that second seat at the airport on the day of travel, they pay whatever fare is available that day, which can easily exceed the cost of their original ticket. The armrest, as per Southwest’s own website, is now the official boundary. Also, the airline reserves the right to make that call at its sole discretion.
Social Media Posts Go Viral
New York Times reports has reported the stories of some travelers who have flooded social media with their postsafter the policy change has gone into effect.
“On Feb. 6, Erika DeBoer, a frequent Southwest traveler, was headed from Omaha to Las Vegas with her best friend. At the gate, an agent asked whether she would need a second seat, suggesting that it was for the “safety and comfort of other passengers,” Ms. DeBoer said in a TikTok video. The agent would not take no for an answer, and Ms. DeBoer had to pay $176 for an extra seat.”
That inconsistency is part of the problem. Enforcement seems to vary wildly by agent and by flight, which means plus-size passengers don’t really know what to expect.
“Keirstyn Catron, a 24-year-old from Houston, said she was denied boarding on a full Southwest flight at LaGuardia Airport last November because of her size. Two gate agents asked whether she could fit in one seat, rejected her affirmative answer, and said she had to rebook on a later flight because this one did not have two adjacent seats available.”
The Pundit’s Mantra
ISouthwest’s new policy is actually similar to what most major US carriers already have in place. Airlines like United, Delta and American have long required plus-size passengers to purchase additional seats without the same refund guarantees Southwest used to offer. So in a narrow sense, Southwest has simply aligned itself with industry standard.
However, there’s the other side to the argument as well. Southwest built a loyal following among plus-size travelers because it wasn’t like the others. That differentiation was real and it mattered to people. Removing it with little notice and then apparently training staff to identify and confront passengers at the gate, is a different matter entirely from simply changing a refund policy.
This change also comes alongside Southwest’s other recent departures from its original identity, marking the end of open seating, assigned seats, premium cabin options. The airline is clearly in the middle of a significant reinvention. Whether that reinvention leaves room for the warmth and flexibility that once defined it remains to be seen.
