British Airways will commence flying from London Heathrow to Osaka from the summer 2019 timetable. New flights will also start between London City and Munich.
At the same time, the carrier will be increasing frequencies on other popular routes. Berlin, Dublin and Prague will see increases to 18, 38 and seven times per week respectively from 10 November. Geneva will increase to 16 weekly services from December.
Konnichiwa Osaka!
New Boeing 787-8 Dreamliners will operate the four times weekly service to Osaka. Japan Airlines will codeshare on the flights according to the press release, which extends the joint business partnership between the two carriers.
London City to Munich
According to the press release, one of British Airways’ top customers is Siemens. They opened a head office in Munich in 2016 and have a large presence in The Crystal, their building located very close to London City Airport. This is certainly a big factor in opening this route.
Overall Thoughts
British Airways is also adding four extra cities in Japan via a codeshare agreement with Japan Airlines out of Tokyo Haneda. These are Miyazaki, Kumamoto, Komatsu and Matsuyama.
It has been around ten years since BA last served Osaka. Tourism growth and success of the route on other partner airlines meant this was a logical choice to reopen. As it’s considered the food capital of Japan, I’d certainly be happy to go back there.
