Over the years, I’ve written about the impact of design on credit cards. In my opinion, it’s largely just a marketing gimmick. Over the years, we’ve seen metallic credit cards to be the norm as issuers add new benefits and also ratchet up annual fees. Chase is now joining the fray with the refreshed Chase Sapphire Reserve, which is set to be revealed next week.

Analysis
After spending almost two decades in the field of Marketing, I’m probably the last one to be swayed by a metallic credit card. I don’t really look at it at anything worth extra to pay for. So, in essence, I’m not convinced to jump on to this newly designed card.
However, there’s another rumor about the possibility of Chase removing the current 1.5 cents per point feature on the Sapphire Reserve card and replacing that with more targeted offers, like the ones we are currently seeing. In my opinion, that would be a devaluation because the current rate of 1.5 cents per point via Chase Travel is pretty good.
The Pundit’s Mantra
I don’t plan to make any changes to my credit card portfolio after this launch. I have carried the Chase Sapphire Preferred card for a long time and I love the benefits it offers for an annual fee of just $95. Also, I already have the Amex Platinum card by Charles Schwab, which helps me cover both Amex and Chase partners whenever I need to transfer points.
