Over the last few years, Amex has refreshed many of their products. In almost all cases, we’ve seen an increase in the annual fee, accompanied by credits with partner brands. Now, the Amex Gold card has undergone a refresh and has a brand new welcome bonus as well. Let’s have a look at the changes.
Amex Gold Card Refresh
With this refresh on the Amex Gold Card, Amex has now increased the annual fee to $325, as opposed to the previous $250. Also, you can also opt for new White Gold card design.
Welcome Bonus
With the Amex Gold card, you’ll earn 60,000 Membership Rewards points after you spend $6,000 in the first 6 months of card membership. This should be pretty easy for most people since it only requires you to spend $1,000 each month.
In addition to the 60,000 points bonus, you can also earn up to $100 in statement credits. You will earn these credits in the form of rebates on dining spend worldwide. For the first 6 months after you’re approved, you can earn 20% in credits, up to a maximum of $100.

- $100 Resy credit (Split bi-annually, $50 Jan-Jun and another $50 Jul-Dec each year)
- $120 dining credit is undergoing a slight change. You will still earn $10 in credits each month. However, Amex is dropping Milk Bar and Shake Shack, starting Sept 26, 2024. Instead, you can now earn the dining credit at Five Guys
You will continue to enjoy all the other benefits that Amex is offering on the card currently:
- 4x points on groceries in the US (Max $25,000 per calendar year)
- 3x points on flights booked directly with airlines or at amextravel.com
- 2x points on prepaid hotels and other eligible purchases, when you book via amextravel.com

Also, you’ll continue to earn the following credits and benefits:
- $120 in Uber Cash ($10 each month)

The Pundit’s Mantra
Yesterday, I wrote about I saw these changes as a net negative, since I don’t spend with many of Amex’s partner brands on this card. However, they may work for you, depending on which dining establishments you frequently spend at. Also, if you’re unsure, you can always sign up for the card now and make a decision after a year. For the first year, the extra $100 in credits can help take off some sting from the higher annual fee.
