Miami Airport concourse expands for American Airlines. The airline and Miami Airport authorities unveiled a $1 billion investment in a major expansion of American’s hub at Miami International Airport (MIA). The expansion is centered on a complete revamp of Concourse D’s Gate D60 area. The plan is designed to modernize infrastructure, boost capacity, improve customer experience. Renderings show a series of new concessions, centralized waiting area, and space for a new lounge. Construction is slated to begin in 2027 with completion targeted around 2030.

New Concourse Expansion Details
The centerpiece of the project is the reinvention of Gate D60. The development will replace the current ground-level holding area for American Eagle flights. The new concourse will become a three-level terminal that will add 17 new gates. These gates will be contact gates, keeping passengers in a climate controlled environment. The new gates will fitted for regional jets and for larger aircraft. Gates will connect to Concourse D’s U.S. Customs and Border Protection facility for international arrivals. The expansion also includes enhanced dining and shopping spaces, improved baggage systems, and bright, open interior design elements, including space for a new Admiral’s Club.

American’s Plans for Its Miami Hub
American is Miami’s largest airline, accounting for more than 60 % of the airport’s passenger traffic. The airline plans nearly 400 daily departures to around 155 global destinations this year from MIA. The investment aligns with American’s broader Miami improvements. These include updated customer experience and premium touches. American will soon open a larger Flagship Lounge (taking over the space that current includes the D30 Flagship Lounge and Admirals Club) and a new Admirals Club located along Concourse D.

Other Airlines Expanding at Miami
While this announcement focuses on American’s infrastructure investment, other carriers are also growing at MIA. American Airlines partner Porter Airlines launched new flights from Ottawa. British Airways, American’s Trans-Atlantic joint venture partner, will open a new lounge in Concourse E some time this year. Gol Airlines of Brazil, another American partner, is launching flights from Asuncion, Paraguay.
Conrado’s Thoughts
This investment will be a huge improvement over the current Gate D60 setup. It will modernize that portion of Miami airport, and will add updated concessions and, hopefully!, a new lounge. I am very excited to see American’s revamp of its Miami facilities, and the new British Airways lounge once it opens. In my opinion, Miami is one of the best airports to transit through. Between awesome food and a variety of lounges, if you’re flying out of Concourse D or E, you’ll find something to do.
