What’s the card worth for me?

So, let’s cut to the chase and this blog post should help you ascertain where you stand with regards to the fee. In my opinion, here are the top benefits that I’ll be using that will help me pay for the fee on the card:

  • $600 Hotel Credit: I value this at the full amount.
  • Complimentary Hilton Honors Gold Status: Free breakfast at properties outside the US provides great value to me. Almost all of my travel is international in nature. Free breakfast for two saves at least $60 every day. Given that I stay at Hiltons at least 5-6 nights each year. I value this benefit at a minimum of $300.
  • $200 Airline Fee Credit: This credit is also easy to use. You’ll find enough data points that discuss creative ways to maximize the credit at full value. Another $200 in my pocket.
  • $300 Digital Entertainment Credit: I love the new credits with YouTube as I already subscribe to their premium services. This will make it very easy to extract full value from the benefit. I value this benefit at its full value of $300.
  • Centurion Lounge Access and Priority Pass are the icing on the cake, but I value them at an extra $100 per year.

There you go. I just mentioned four benefits and I’m already getting a value of a minimum of $1,500 for a card charging an annual fee of $895. While the shopping and dining credits with Lululemon and Resy are great, I generally tend to use the card for its travel benefits, so I’m already getting ahead with the value I’m getting out of the travel focused benefits.

Assigning Value

Value is subjective. So here’s a list of benefits, you can simply copy and paste these into a spreadsheet and assign a number next to it based on your travel patterns. Also, bear in mind that if you’re already an existing customer of a brand, then your value is notionally more as opposed to a situation where you’re switching brands just to make use of an Amex ‘credit’.

The Pundit’s Mantra

So what do you think about the card after the refresh? I may just hold on to it for another year. In my opinion, Amex has tried to cast a net as wide as possible, focusing on travel, dining and entertainment as the three primary categories to come up with a compelling value proposition.

As an existing cardholder, do you plan to renew the card? If you don’t have the card yet, does this refresh entice you to sign up for the card right away? Tell us in the comments section.
