Close on the heels of Amex’s moves, Chase has slowly started tightening the screws, adding new restrictions to their lineup of cards. Most recently, I wrote about how Chase has expanded their welcome bonus restrictions to their no annual fee business cards. Chase already has stringent rules about how many Sapphire cards you can get, in addition to welcome bonus restrictions as well. Similarly, Chase recently imposed another ‘once in a lifetime rule’ on the Ink Business Preferred card. However, this method may still help you get the bonus again.

Bypassing the new Chase ‘once in a lifetime rule’

Let’s have a look at the standard public offer on the card. Chase is offering a limited time welcome bonus of 100,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points after you spend $8,000 in the first 3 months of card membership. However, when you have a look at the terms and conditions, the once in a lifetime language is there.

100,000 Bonus Points After You Spend $8,000 On Purchases In The First 3 Months From Account Opening: The new cardmember bonus may not be available to you if you have ever had this card. We may also consider factors pertinent to your business in determining your bonus eligibility.

Chase Refer a Friend Offers

Now, compare this with the offer you see via Chase’s refer a friend links. In contrast to the public offer, the refer a friend offer shows a welcome bonus of 90,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points after you spend $8,000 in the first 3 months of card membership. However, this offer doesn’t have the same restrictions as the 100k offer which is publicly available.

90,000 Bonus Points After You Spend $8,000 On Purchases In The First 3 Months From Account Opening: To qualify and receive your bonus, you must make Purchases totaling $8,000 or more during the first 3 months from account opening.

The Pundit’s Mantra

If you’re okay receiving 10,000 fewer points as a welcome bonus, then this is a great way you can get the card again with the welcome bonus, even if you’ve earned the welcome bonus offer on the same card in the past. Some of you may have previously held this card and earned its welcome bonus. However, sacrificing 10,000 points to earn another 90,000 is still excellent value, especially given the card’s strong earning rates on business spending categories.

If you’re looking to get the bonus again, the I’d recommend that you get it while the offer is still valid. As issuers continue to update their restrictions, gaps like these may eventually close. If you’ve been considering adding the Ink Business Preferred to your portfolio, then it may be worth acting sooner rather than later. You will also need to factor in other criteria like your credit score, Chase 5/24 status and other factors as simply qualifying for the bonus may not guarantee an approval.
