Hotel Review: Huge Hyatt Place Amsterdam Airport

Background:

On my recent visit to Amsterdam, I stayed 2 nights in the city center. My friend in the city was leaving a day before my flight back to New York, so I decided to stay at the airport for my last night to wind down, and get ready for my flight the next morning and save money on a hotel.

Booking:

For my dates, I saw that the Hyatt Place Amsterdam Airport was available for 3,500 World of Hyatt Points. It is currently a Category 1 Property, and was pricing at off-peak for my Sunday night stay. During standard award rates it would cost 5,000 World of Hyatt Points, and 6,500 during peak. Cash rates were going for about EUR 90, so I thought it was a solid redemption still.

Note, that beginning March 28, 2023, the Hyatt Place Amsterdam Airport is going up to a Category 2. Now, off-peak stays will be 6,500 points, standard will be 8,000 points and peak will be 9,500 points per night.

I’ve stayed at Amsterdam Airport before at the Renaissance back in 2019 as hotels in the city were quite pricey during Tulips season. There are a few hotels actually walking distance/connected to the terminal (including the Hilton and Sheraton), but they are generally more expensive. The Hyatt Place Amsterdam Airport is not walkable to the airport, but the hotel does have an airport shuttle.

Airport Shuttle:

The airport shuttle runs every 30 minutes to and from the airport. The first shuttle leaves the airport from the hotel at 6:30AM and the last shuttle leaves the airport at 11:15PM. So the shuttle leaves the hotel at the 30/00 mark, and leaves the airport at the 15/45 marks. For shuttle service from the airport, it meets at the hotel shuttle pickup just outside the main arrivals and train station area.

They do make you make a reservation for a bus back to the airport as they sometimes fill up. For the shuttle from the hotel to the airport a EUR 5 surcharge is applicable per person, except for those who are World of Hyatt members.

The shuttle worked efficiently and arrived on time both ways for me. From the airport, I joined the 3:15pm one and was the only one on the shuttle, and to the airport there were only 3 of us on the 8am one. I thought it would possibly be more crowded, but perhaps Sunday night (or February) is off-season for the property. The ride is approximately 10 minutes.

Arrival to Hotel:

I got to the hotel around 3:30PM and my first impression was that the lobby was quite large and nice for a Hyatt Place property. I’ve only stayed at one other Hyatt Place before, in Page, Arizona and that one was much smaller. The Hyatt Place Amsterdam Airport has 330 rooms, which is quite a lot for a Hyatt Place. The lobby had me feeling that I was at a Hyatt or Hyatt Regency property.

The reception is just a few steps to the right after you step in, and I was helped by a very friendly associate. She thanked me for my World of Hyatt Explorist Status and said I was upgraded to the next category, a High Floor King on the 8th Floor with a view of the airport.

She apologized for the fact that the room wasn’t quite ready yet but offered me a complimentary drink at the bar. She was very friendly and continued to keep me updated and within 20 minutes, the room was ready! I appreciated her hospitality. I also forgot converters this trip and the hotel didn’t have USB plugs, so she let me borrow some.

Breakfast Included at Hyatt Place International Properties?

Before my stay, I read online that breakfast at Hyatt Place’s internationally doesn’t have to be included in your rate and each property can decide how they do it. I emailed the hotel beforehand to see if breakfast was included with my points redemption. They said that while it wasn’t included in my rate, they were happy to offer me a complimentary breakfast since I am a Hyatt Explorist member, which was nice of them.

High Floor King Room:

I was assigned to a High Floor King Room on the 8th floor. The associate let me know it would be very quiet, and she was right. It was at the end of the hall, and I didn’t hear any noises during my stay which was relaxing.

The first thing I noticed was that the room was quite spacious. Online it says the room ranges from 25-29 square meters (269-312 square feet). I think mine was on the larger side.

There’s a large sofa that can also turn into a sleeper, and a large king-sized bed. The king-sized bed was pretty comfortable, and the pillows were good too for a four-star level. I got a solid night’s rest.

A desk area, plus closet space with iron and ironing board was also provided.

There was a hot water kettle, along with instant coffee mix and tea bags. A mini fridge for personal use was also available.

The bathroom was quite spacious, with ample counter space and a large walk-in shower. The shower even had a little shower bench. While the door to the room is glass, it’s not really see-through, and it has a lock, so you don’t have to be worried from a privacy perspective if you’re sharing the room with someone.

Toiletries were in reusable bottles and provided by Kenet MD. Unfortunately, body lotion wasn’t provided which was a bit annoying. The issue I had with the bathroom was that it only had a wand for a showerhead and its water pressure was too weak.

Some minor imperfections in the room did show, such as large stains on the sofa and the wood furnishings being scuffed. The hotel opened back in 2014, so perhaps a refresh is needed. Additionally, I found a cough drop wrapper under the sink area, and there was a bath towel that had makeup/sunblock stains. So, cleanliness could be improved upon, but it was nothing too bad.

Dining:

Connected to the front desk is the bar and market which run 24/7. The market offers grab-and-go items, from freshly prepared and perfectly packaged meals like sandwiches and wraps to snacks. There is ample seating if you want to hang out here for a bite.

There is also a full-service restaurant at the hotel that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. I ended up having dinner here and had a great Chicken Satay dish.

The breakfast was pretty good, and had a pretty extensive selection for a Hyatt Place. There were scrambled eggs, bacon, pastries, fruit mix, among other items. I also enjoyed the Passionfruit Juice.

Amenities:

On the second floor, are meeting rooms, as well as a decently sized fitness center. There were some people working out when I went to check out the fitness center, so I didn’t snap a picture. But, it would have everything you would need for a workout.

One random thing I noticed was that the elevators were huge. I think I tried all 3 of the elevators, and each were very long and had two sets of floor buttons on each side.

The Verdict:

Overall, I had an enjoyable stay at the Hyatt Place Amsterdam Airport. From the warm welcome, full-service restaurant, good sized room and punctual hotel shuttle, it suited my needs for the one-night airport stay. Depending on the price, I would definitely consider staying here again if my travels bring me to Amsterdam Airport.
