The history of Aer Lingus is a fascinating story. It’s probably not too surprising, considering the airline is coming up on 90 years old. With its famous Shamrock, it is perhaps even more well known today than at any other time.
Connecting Ireland with Europe and the USA, it will serve 97 airports and 120 routes in summer 2025. This includes 18 destinations in North America, making the health of the States very important indeed.
The History of Aer Lingus
A lot has happened over the years and a person called flaps 10 on YouTube has put together a very good presentation all about it. This video runs for half an hour and is an easy, informative and pretty accurate take.
What is enjoyable is how well put together the footage is. Clearly the creator has taken a deep dive and used a plethora of sources to edit together this story.
Quite a lot of different aircraft are featured, such as the venerable Douglas DC-3, the graceful Lockheed Constellation, powerful Vickers Viscount, their first jet, the Boeing 720, all the way through to the Boeing 747 and today’s A320s and A330s.
Now under the IAG umbrella with fellow airlines Iberia, British Airways, Vueling and LEVEL, things continue to go well. A bright future seems relatively assured.
Overall Thoughts
It’s fascinating to see the history of Aer Lingus put together so well. Aside from a few errors in pronunciation, it is pretty spot on and provides an excellent overview of what has happened to date.
While Aer Lingus is still a relatively small airline in global terms, it makes good money and serves its niche very well. In Ireland, it is almost revered as a brand, judging by the amount of press it gets.
