Delta Points’ First Royal Caribbean Cruise – Enchantment of the Seas
My friend Delta Points called several weeks ago and asked me if $200 and something was a good price for a junior suite. I said, heck yeah, and the rest is history. Here is his review of one of my favorite ships, Enchantment of the Seas. (Note: A ship can carry a boat, but not the other way around. More on that later.)
No, that is not the ship I was on, above is the Quantum of the Seas that my friend MJ was on for the better part of two weeks. What I was on was the Enchantment of the Seas, an older Vision-class ship (but maybe small enough to be called a boat compared to Quantum – inside joke between MJ & me btw). (MJ says – experienced cruisers know better than refer to a 70,000+ grt vessel as a boat. 🙂 )
It has been a while since I have taken a cruise after my less that stellar Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) experience. But it had not soured me on cruising in general, just NCL. So when a very good price popped up for a Jr. Suite for the two of us for under $700 all in (after $40 credit back from TopCashBack) I jumped on it. Booking via Orbitz was fine and they were helpful with the one cabin change I requested from the side of the boat, err ship, to the back. I love aft balcony rooms!
I flew down the day before on Delta, stayed overnight at the SPG Sheraton MCO airport location and took a shuttle that picked us up at the hotel. Thankfully Lisa was paying attention as the driver tossed out our bags at the 1st stop, the Disney ship, and I jumped out and put them back in the cargo trailer. Next time I will take the shuttle service MJ recommended (TraveLynx). We also decided on the Ultimate Drink package that cost almost as much as the cruise itself (well not really but still a bunch). I’m just not sure if I would do it again. The perk was you could order just about anything and even if your drink just got hot in the sun you could dump it and get a new one. Or, if after dinner, you wanted an espresso or cognac there was no hesitation to enjoy one. I think I did end up paying a bit more than if I had just paid per drink. On to our Jr. Suite cabin.
The room was great. For a cruise ship it was nice sized and open as you can see.
Nice TV, space to get ready and sofa to lounge on. My biggest complaint would be the bed. I LOVE, I mean LOVE, Westin Heavenly beds that are soft. This thing was a rock. By day two I was in real pain. They need to replace these things soon! (Note from MJ: if you find the bed to be a little firm ask your stateroom attendant if they have an “egg crate” topper available. Maybe I should’ve told my friend Delta Points about that? Oops.)
The bathroom was “big” for a ship. Shower functioned fine and water was hot and everything just worked.
The real star was our balcony. I mean look at this thing. We had two deck chairs, a table with two regular chairs, and room to move about. We really never needed to go anywhere when the sun was on us. Very nice. I really always want some kind of balcony when I get on a ship.
We departed on time (or even a little early) and enjoyed the slow cruise to Bahamas. When I say slow, I mean slow. This ship does the same itinerary Port Canaveral – Bahamas – Private Island & back both as a 3 day and our 4 day. So you really “putter” the first day at sea.
Having said that the sea was like glass for all 4 days. I have never seen the sea this calm. I mean waves must have been 1-2″ (inches not feet). Remarkable. The Disney ship seemed in a hurry and left us in her wake right away (bye Mickey).
Day two, sea day, was time to check out our little boat (yeah yeah ship). MJ had told me this was one of the prettiest ships in the RCI fleet. It was really neat. I did not get in the pools or hot tubs but everyone seemed to enjoy them a lot!
We did get to work and test out some fruity drinks from our package and sit in the sun. No wind, slow cruise, and clear blue skies.
Perfect. I quickly found out Patron margaritas were too strong for me as I had one and then took a nap. Then again, what a way to spend a day. I woke up for lunch and we tested the Park Cafe also recommend by MJ.
The food was very good. MUCH better than the buffet. Plus, we could get it to go and take it to our balcony to enjoy (along with another set of fruity drinks). Then another nap (it was a hard day let me tell ya)! I cannot tell you how nice it was to unwind this way.
Time to get ready for dinner. MJ told us we have to try the only specially restaurant on the ship CHOPS the first night. So we made a reservation and went to check it out.
Now I have to tell you, the photos that are up next, are from two nights at CHOPS. Why, well things did not go so well the first night. I mean, for a $30 each upcharge over the cost of the cruise, I would hope for something special. It was special, but not in a good way.
The waiter was not good. Started by telling us the 20% discount we got would be good as his tip (but tip was already included). Then Lisa got the wrong steak. Then a second round of wrong steaks showed up. Then I found out my steak had been under a heat lamp while they finally fixed Lisa’s order. Gee thanks – $30 for a heat lamp dried out steak. They offered to redo it but I was done at this point and just wanted to eat.
When I was 75% done the waiter unhelpfully would not take NO for an answer and plopped down a new steak in front of me. I was REALLY done at this point and just pushed it away. I could not WAIT to get up and leave. The manager came over and asked what had happened. I wanted to just save it for the blog, but at last told him. He was great and I am happy I did. He comped that night and begged us to come back. We did, got another waiter, Renaldo who was amazing, and the service was beyond perfect. I was even offered the $19 upcharge T-bone at no extra charge over the cover. I have to say Lisa’s 9 oz filet mignon was the best of all I tasted. Either way, THEY MADE IT RIGHT. I was truly impressed and this event sold me on RCI for many years to come. Impressive. (PS – The mushroom soup is to DIE for and a must have)!
We ended night one on the deck watching Monday Night Football on the big screen by the pool. It was a bit cold and I wish I had found the Viking lounge upstairs to watch inside through the glass (more on that later).
Day two we arrived early in Bahamas. I had no interest in getting off the boat and we spent most of the day reading and lounging and napping in the adults only area called the Solarium. It was perfect – few people and restful. Much needed.
Before dinner two at CHOPS I already talked about, we found the Viking lounge. This is a NICE private area no one seems to know about. The view of the ship is amazing. I love this place. There are also two other private lounges for RCI frequent floaters like MJ (we did not get in as this was our first RCI cruise). This is where I should have come to watch football. No sound, but warm is better.
Day 3 we woke up with our end of the boat staring right at the NCL private island (they are taunting me I see).
The RCI one was nice. We were on one of the first tenders out and found a spot on the far side of the island where no one was. Quiet, a bar close by, and sunshine. It was perfect for many hours until a large group of college kids showed up. By then I had all the sun I needed and it was back to the boat for lunch as warmed up BBQ on the island (buffet food) did not sound all that great. The funny thing is we had the same food on the ship buffet. It was disappointing. In fact just about all of the RCI buffet food was disappointing and should be avoided I found.
Time to at last test out the main dining room. I had e-mailed RCI and asked for a table just for the two of us. The first email MJ recommend bounced back to me. The next one I found was ignored. We were seated with two other couples who were very nice and kind, but we had wanted it to be just us so a bit disappointing.
What you see above is a mix of the last two nights dinners. I don’t know how simple it is to tell from photos, but the food was just OK. Not bad (nothing like the buffet) but not great either. I will say NCL food is MILES better than RCI’s in the non-specialty restaurants. This seems to this rookie cruiser to be one area RCI needs to step up its game.
I also have to say I do not like the group dining idea and set times. I like going wherever, whenever and just us two when I feel like it. I have no need to develop a “bond” with my servers even though they were good and nice to us the two nights we were there. These folks do work hard but service at a larger table is never as good, IMO, as just a table for two. (MJ notes: I forgot to tell Rene about My Time Dining)
I will say our room steward, Artanna was just about perfect. We could not leave the room for more than a minute and by the time we got back he had cleaned something or replaced towels or made up towel animals and yet we never ever “caught” him in our room (how did he do that). We gave him a nice extra tip on top of the built in tips you must pay when you depart. VERY impressive.
At last it was time to go. Our ordered shuttle was there (outsourced) and I really was sad to have to get off the boat (ship). Overall the experience was good and I like many things RCI does – service being truly tops.
Some final thoughts. I could not join the RCI loyalty program until I had completed my first cruise. Then, when I did, it would not let me. I could not get RCI on twitter to help other than provide a number for me to call. I think cruise lines in general need to work on their rewards programs. They just don’t seem to get it. Time will tell how I like RCI as I rise up the elite levels with them. Also on cabin choice. I never want to “not” have a balcony. When there is a crush of folks on the main decks, your private area is so nice to get away to. Plus, when you are at any kind of suite level cabin check in and boarding is SO much fast. We walked past a line of 50+ and it must have saved us 30 minutes in line. Lastly, if you can, go all carry on. It is so much simpler both on and off the ship.
Bottom line I am so happy to be back on the water. I look forward to my next RCI cruise but may just have to test the waters with some other lines before I turn back to RCI for another ride! – Rene
Thanks Rene for such a great review! I love Enchantment of the Seas, and think the ship is a real upgrade in the 3/4 night short cruise market for Royal Caribbean. After an aft balcony cabin, you may have a hard time with anything else!!! Thanks again for taking the time to prepare a review and share it here!

Great review. Would you have had as many drinks without the “upgrade” that you purchased? Bet not!
Have never been on a cruise but would love to!
I have been on 1 cruise several years ago — got a bit seasick.
With the newer ships and a motion sickness patch I’m ready to try again!
Getting the urge to hit the high seas!
So sad the food was not all that good. I figure that’s one of the big things you’re going for on a cruise.
Great post, cool pics. I love cruising and this inspired me on looking for the next one soon.
Cruises are not for everyone. You either hate them or love them. I personally love them. The only problem is that I don’t have anyone else that loves them to cruise with me. Lol. And always get the drink packages. Drinks add up!
Looks great. Wish I could go!
Great review, but still has me wondering what the draw is to a cruise… I like to control my vacation experience and this seems like you have very little.
I will have to try out Royal Caribbean Cruise, although your info about the food deters me. I wish there was more information about the drink package you purchased and whether you would consider it again.
I’ve never been on a cruise before, but I might just have to check one out this year. Thanks for the review.
Great review. I am excited for our RC cruise this March!
I’ve only cruised with Carnival but this makes me want to try Royal Caribbean. Thanks!
Great review thanks…..we have only cruised once to Alaska on Princess and we did the wild card room ……paid for a balcony room but would not know where until the cruise which was interesting ……our room was almost like that…….we thought it was great !!
I’m with MJ – always get the best drink package. It makes the entire trip much better!
RCCL is my favorite cruise line! Haven’t been back in a few years as we keep burning our points and miles for Hawaii but my son keeps asking to go again! I love those aft cabins too! I think this class of ships is my favorite!
wow, that looks so awesome! Makes me wish I can go on a cruise again!
Nice review. You look so relaxed in the photos that you have me thinking of a cruise.
Rene,
Thanks for the trip recap. My wife and I have been on two RCI cruises. Both were to great locations and like yours- the food was not the highlight!
great review. making me consider going on one soon.
sounds like a fun and relaxing time!
Great review, making me rethink going on a cruise soon!
The family and I have never cruised, but this makes us want to go sometime to somewhere warm!
I want to go on a cruise and eat tons of food. Plus the towel animals looked great.
interesting post, makes me wish I were there
I am glad you had a relaxing time on your cruise. I would love to try one, but because I do get seriously sick on the water hesitate. Thanks for the review.
The photos prove it or I wouldn’t believe Rene is capable of just being still and relaxing! Great review-honest and insightful-enough to make us think we should consider a cruise in the near future. I would LOVE to see you and MJ join forces on a more exotic plane/ship destination for your readers. Happy Trails!
Look forward to taking some of this advice/review into consideration on my 2015 cruise…
Rene – loved your honest review on RCI. I have cruised 3 times with them and found the food to be just “ok” as well. I did not see what the big fuss is with them. I am an avid cruiser and have found Celebrity Cruise line as the best in regards with service, food, and relaxation.
Been on 3 cruises over 3 decades. Carnival in the 1990’s out of Miami, Royal Caribbean out of San Juan PR in 2000 and Norwegian out of Honolulu in 2010. Norwegian’s “Pride of America” was okay but I liked the experience better on Royal Caribbean. BTW, Carnival was a circus of screaming kids and their food wasn’t so good.
I’ve never taken an official cruise, but it was very interesting and informative to read your review to get a taste of what it is like. My wife is pretty adamant about not going on a cruise – she gets claustrophobic, so I’m not sure if I’ll ever get a chance.
Rene, glad you discovered the great experiences you can have on RCI. When’s your next cruise?
Sounds nice, especially the balcony suite. Not sure I could handle more than 3 days on a cruise though.
Hi Rene (and MJ) – Great review! After a couple of NCL cruises (both good experiences) we’re considering RCI as well. Your review is a great help – thanks for posting! And yes – aft suites are, well, sweet! 😉
Cheers!
Rob.
Great drama! I loved the part about the insistent waiter and your shoving the steak back. More of these kind of reviews, please, Rene!
Never taken a cruise, but now I might try it.
I’ve always wanted to try a cruise and this helps!
Sounds like a relaxing time! Makes me want to go cruising!
I’ve never cruised, but this makes it sounds like fun.
Thank you for the detailed review. We were just deciding btwn NCL and RC, and opted for NCL. We probably will try RC next time.
Thanks Renee….Great review, been trying to get my husband on a cruise again after a horrible experience on the old Big Red Boat Disney ship 23 years ago.
I have never taken a cruise, but want to someday. Great review Rene!
Would love to cruise on RCI again.
I have to agree with you Rene, I LOVE RCI. I went on the Enchantment for a 3 day cruise in March. This was my first experience on RCI and I was pleasantly surprised. I didn’t have the opportunity to eat in the specialty restaurants, but, the buffets were better than what I’ve had with Carnival. The ship is huge, but, we loved it!
Good commments. But needing rest in the Solarium? Rest from what?
I recently went on a cruise and had an aft balcony room. It was great! Can’t wait to do another cruise.
Good review with lots of photos to support the text. Thanks.
My favorite part about cruises are the TOWELIMALS!!!!!
Found your RCL review from the Delta Points blog. I’m glad you (re)found cruising. More on that later, but first the bad news.

Regarding your poor first meal at Chops, your comment, “I wanted to just save it for the blog”, was petty and elitist. Yes, there were problems, and I’m surprised, as the up-charge dining rooms are usually prestigous, senior positions. As you found out, though, when the cruise lines sees that they have made a mistake, they’ll do cartwheels to make it right. Don’t, “save it for the blog”. I’ve followed you for a couple of years, and you’re better than that.

There are so many other points to comment on, but almost all are personal preference (we were seated at a large table on our first crusise and were surprised to love it). Perhaps the most helpful comment I can offer is that the 3-4 day cruises to the Bahamas are a very limited window into cruising. As I write this we’re about to embark on a 14-day cruise from Buenos Aires to Santiago, but even seven-day sailings in the Caribbean would be quite different from your short jaunt.

Crusing can be a greate value for a vacation, if you understand the pros and cons. Explore the worlf of crusing a bit more an I think you’ll be able to make a better decision if it’s right for you.

p.s. – Since I know you’re a diver, be forewarned that diving excursions from the cruise lines are hit or miss. I’ve had some great dives, and some that were downright horrible. Unfortunately these are all run by third-party contractors, so the excursion desk will take one’s complaints, but can’t do much about them.
The last cruise we went on was Disney a few years ago and that was surprisingly awesome (I was expecting it to be a little too much but they did an amazing job for both kids and adults).
Think I need to look at booking another cruise — looks amazing!
Great review!
I’ve always considered a cruise, but the rash of biological issues on them has held me back. Also, Renè, if I happen to be lucky enough for the Saturday swag, I hope it has an unobtanium tag in it.
Thanks in advance.
Nice Review. Makes me consider a cruise for 2015.
Nice review, other Rene. 🙂
I’m a frequent RC cruiser and I find it really interesting to read the perspective of someone new to RC ships. MJ gave you some great tips. I’m not sure why you didn’t get your table pre-assigned by emailing a request. I have always gotten a response and my requests honored.
Enchantment is a charming, older ship, but I do hope you give one of the “big” ships a try one day. Odd as it sounds, the bigger the ship, the less crowded they feel, in general. Also, more dining options sounds like something that might appeal to you – as well as newer bedding. The aft balconies are my favorite cabins too, great choice!
Rene, You went to the Solarium for much needed rest? Rest from what? 🙂
Thanks for the honest reflections, especially of the dinning experiences. We never pay the up charge for specaility dinning and always enjoy the other options.
Definitely will have to keep an eye out for these cheap cruises since that was a steal
René, consider giving NCL another chance. My family has been avoiding them for several years (except in Hawaii), opting mainly for Princess instead, but we just had an exceptional experience on the NCL Getaway the week before Christmas. Every aspect of it was terrific; it’s a brand-new ship, and they’ve definitely learned some lessons about how to design cruise ships over the years, and the staff was outstanding. There was also quite a variety of live music and shows, if you’re into that sort of thing. I thought the most fun was a couple of guys playing rock songs on “dueling pianos” — the audience was really into it and there was a lot of fun energy! NCL has improved tremendously.
Thanks for the review. My only cruise was on Carnival years ago and it was really fun! That was before the days of “sickness” associated with recent cruise lines in the news. I may take another cruise sometime…maybe a European one.
Never been on a cruise.
Great blog, great post. Can’t wait till my first cruise in 2 months out. Thanks!
I love RCCL!
Sounds like a blast…might be time I start looking into taking a cruise with some friends!
@JohnHace – I only paid for 60MIN time. It was MEH at best and way too much money. $100 for the trip. I paid $20 for just an hour as I went. I wanted to be “off line” but still in contact. I attempted to do some free “SR.Frogs” at the 1st stop but was also MEH. In some ways happy so much to force me to UP-Plug. If it were cheaper I would pay and not get to relax. Kinda like GoGo over the water to Europe etc. I will often pay and I hate it as that has been a few hours of “me” time. #TravelBloggerIssues.
.
BTW all – thanks SO much for all the kind words for the review and for MJ. That man truly is a class act! 🙂
Rene, How was the WiFi? Speed? Cost?
Wow…great content Rene!
I like that Hyatt platinum gets me M life status, which gets me some extra perks on royal carribbean
We have been on RCI twice now and have enjoyed them both times. We have booked a NCL cruise and have an aft balcony–looks like we made a good choice!!
Great review!
I am glad it was a nice ship, our experience has not been as nice
Nice review, though I won’t take a cruise anytime soon
Only @delta and the #destructionofskymiles could get @deltapoints traveling at sea level instead of 35,000 feet
My wife has been trying to get me on a cruise for the seven years we have been together. Maybe it is finally time to give it a try! Thanks for the pointers, from one Diamond Medallion to another!
Love RCL! Great review.
I have never took a cruise before, and honestly, but reading this post kind of made me want to take one 🙂 Thanks for your thorough review, Rene!
Great review have not been on RCCL but her sister line Celebrity
hi you amazing bloggers Rene you wrote an exquisitely detailed
Review of your cruise. I have never cruises and have difficulty sitting in one place
For too long:) Hence, I fear being held captive in a SHIP
My friends say I’m nutty :)perhaps one day I will find my sea legs
In the meantime happy new year to all
Loved the post. Made me want to take a cruise. However, as a single traveller, it is usually difficult because most cruises are based on double-occupancy.
Sounds ok for a short cruise. Not sure if I could handle a whole week or more
Thanks Rene and MJ for the great review. Glad to see Rene is back cruising again!
We have cruised at least 14 times and RCI is our favorite. Pretty ships, great service and the entertainment has been great!
My wife and I like to sit with other people at dinner. It directs us to someone to sit with for Trivia, etc. We like meeting new people; we talk to each other at home!
Interesting review. Our last cruise was NCL and we vowed to try to avoid it in the future, as much as possible. The service and food were just so-so. The highlight was finding a small typed line in the daily paper which mentioned the Captain’s dinner. We applied for it at the Purser’s Desk and had a wonderful dinner with the Captain and some staff members, along with free wine! Something to look for if you sail with NCL again!
Thanks for the info it will be helpful on our first trip also
Thanks for a great review. I’ve never been on a cruise either. The review was really helpful.
MJRENE the Captain’s Log was great! Perhaps Rene and I think much the same …
On another note MJ I used your suggestions on the Full Drink Package to help a friend save $$$$$$ as he was going on a 2 week Panama Canal Cruise and it would have cost him a fortune if not for your suggestions! Thanks RENE and MJ.
I’ve never cruised and this doesn’t sound bad. 3-4 days is a nice test. But food is one of the reasons I travel and bad food + forced social interaction isn’t necessarily my idea of fun.
Thanks for the great tips Rene, MJ, and commenters! I bookmarked this page because “crusing” is on my bucket list.
Thanks for sharing your experience. My wife and I are looking at Alaska cruise options for next summer.
took about 4 or 5 rcl cruises when the girls were younger as they had activities for them.. The last time was a large ship?4500 it was nuts all pools and areas full but had a balconey on high floor but the dancing overhead till 2 am was nuts…found a quiet chanpagne bar ..only other problem was we were assigned late dinner and wanted early so waited in line n told no so we traded with another family and were were the gonzalez’s for the trip and they were us…funny
thanks for the review! Took my first cruise about 12 years back and wasn’t impressed enough to go back. I may have to reconsider now. Thanks again for the detailed review!
Unfortunately, my wife gets seasick even at the mention of the word “boat”. Big boats, small boats, lakes, oceans, it doesn’t matter — she simply cannot be on a boat. We went on one cruise, way back in 1992 (on Royal Caribbean BTW), and that was it. So unfortunately, I don’t think I’ll get a chance to go on a cruise again.
Very nice review and photos. Someday, we’ll take a cruise, but right now we prefer to spend a week on an island (Hawaiian or Caribbean), which we’re lucky enough to do about six times per year. This year: Aruba, Jamaica, Antigua, Big Island, Maui and North Shore of Oahu.
@Rene & @MJ
We LOVE to cruise and have had great experiences on NCL, but may take a look now at RCL. We shop through SkyMiles own Cruise Program.
Sounds like you need to know the ins and outs before you go to get the most out of your large ship experience. Thanks for sharing!
We prefer smaller ships and especially river cruises in Europe where you stop at much smaller locations.
Great review. Thanks.
I’ve only been on 2 cruises. First on the Carnival Triumph (long time ago before it was famous for mechanical problens) and second on a Viking river cruise on the Danube.
Maybe I’ll try Royal Caribbean some time.
I think I will consider a stern balcony next time we cruise thanks to your recommendation.
We have been on every other cruise line it seems (regent, silversea, princess, Norwegian, carnival, celebrity) but not RCI. Will give it a try, someday.
Excellent review. We have taken Celebrity cruises on many occasions: our favorites were the Balltic and the Panama Canal. However, the food has deteriorated some over the years, except for the Baltic, which apparently has great sourcing. ( also like Celebrity Spa food offerings on Celebrity ships that feature them)
One day I’ll cruise. When I do, I’ll consider RC.
Thoroughly enjoyed you review. It has been 40+ yrs since I have been on a cruise, and not sure I want to return. Not a bad experience, just not my kind of experience. But….”if” I ever do; your recommendation about a suite seems like a winner. We had 4 women in a very small room and your suite looks like heaven in comparison. BTW, read MJonTravel, because even though I am not a cruiser, he includes other items of travel interest. Enjoy both of your blogs – every day.
Have tried cruising twice and still don’t understand why people go on cruises.
Excellent review! It definitely got me thinking about taking a cruise (never taken one before).
It seems as if I need to take a cruise soon! Thanks for your review of the trip, glad you enjoyed yourself.
we have never had the urge to go on a cruse. maybe some day !
Great review!
Sorry you had such a “terrible” time on NCL but I always think that a cruise is what you make of it. If you go in wanting everything your way you will be disappointed. If you go in wanting to relay, enjoy yourself and have a good time, you will. I have been a Platinum elite on NCL with over 15 cruises on the Big 3 (Carnival, Royal, and NCL) and I will continue to go to NCL.
I have not experienced anything you describe in your “awful” trip but I guess that is because I go to enjoy myself and not expect everything is about me alone as there are thousands more people on the ship that want to have a good time too.
Rene — different than flying of course, but I am a big fan of the Cruise vacation over land vacations (all-inclusives), as they enable you to see many different views from the same balcony every day!
As for RCLs C&Anchor program, it too has been on the downgrade over the past few years, with similar issues from the other industries .. too many Frequent travelers making upper tiers.
But in the end .. being a Diamond on the sea or in the air .. is indeed pleasurable at times!
Tony
My only “cruise” was a 24 hour ferry ride on the North Sea in a hurricane. Ended 14 hours later because even the crew were sea sick and ready to get off. Not fun!
RCL is my favorite cruise line. I like RCL because when something is wrong they work harder I make it right. I always use my time dining and get the type of table I request.
If the food is not what I expected it is changed with great customer service.
Never cruised before, but might have to give it a shot someday. Maybe Viking to ease into it.
Nice review. My last cruise was on the Carla Costa many years ago. Please enter me in Renee’s swag contest
Looks like a good time! I need to get out of MN and on a cruise ship SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOON!
I keep meaning to try a cruise…
nice review, I’m ready to take a cruise……….
Great writeup again
Great writeup
Even though Carnival has taken some serious hits over the past few years, I have found consistent, excellent service overall. The hiccups you encountered are to be expected from time to time, and will happen on all boats…………er ships !
Great post. Can’t wait to set sail on a big boat!
Never thought I would like a cruise, but tried one a few years ago and am sold. Looking forward to the next one – thanks for the info on RCI.
I’ve only taken ferries between islands (Greece, Thailand, etc.); this Harper’s article pretty much sealed my opinions of cruise travel years ago: http://harpers.org/wp-content/uploads/2008/09/HarpersMagazine-1996-01-0007859.pdf
Happy reading; hope I win!
Love, love, love cruising! Platinum on carnival. We now can pass the line and pre-board, get goodies in our room, get our laundry done etc. the food in the dining room is so good we never feel like we need the specialty restaurants and the chocolate melting cake is enough alone to be loyal to carnival! Balcony rooms are similar to the one you showed in you pics. Aft balconies have the larger balcony, most have room enough for just two chairs and small table but it’s enough to enjoy sitting and watching the sun set and having a cocktail. I know a lot of people have a phobia of being “trapped” with 1000’s of people but the ships are so big and there’s so much to do (you didn’t mention any of the activities offered) it really doesn’t seem crowded except for maybe around the pools on sunny sea days. Carnival has adults only areas called serenity that are really nice too. And to get around the high drink costs you’re allowed to pack a bottle of wine for each adult sailing and we always pack a couple bottles of rum that seem to make it through their screening. All we need to do is grab some juice or coke and were good to go. Looking forward to our next cruise!
you have a great job!
I have yet to make it on a cruise yet but I am intrigued by the differences every person experiences.
I have always enjoyed cruising RCL. We had a terrible experience on a holland America ship a few years ago. Would not cruise with them again. Thanks for the review Rene.
I like Celebrity and always want the balcony and the included coffee and breakfast morning delivery. Love the doors open at night and the smell of the ocean and bed gently rocking and I sleep like a baby. not too crazy about the over priced rip offs on the land however. your trip report saves me the trouble of trying out the one you took. thanks for that.
Wow, sounds like a nice experience. Never been on a cruise, thinking of a Disney one with kids and this might just be the push. Thanks for the great review Rene.
Smaller cruise ships are definitely a better experience than large ones IMO.
Well, Rene, jumping ship (from DL, I mean!) sounds great. I’d say if Delta owned a cruise line food would no longer be included and all but 2% of us would get oars.
I’ve never been on a cruise. Looks like fun.
I need to try RCI for my next cruise. Have only done Carnival in the past.
Have traveled on more than 60 cruises over the years and seen much of the world. A great way to travel as a couple or even with kids. Have taken cruises to see China, Japan, Russia, Greece, Italy, Hawaii, Alaska etc and also taken Caribbean cruises just to relax. Great way to vacation and travel but you must have realistic expectations depending on which cruise line you choose. Age of passengers, dining quality, shore excursions, room quality all vary widely from line to line.
Great review! Really makes me want to get back out on the water. Jr suite at the back of the boat looks like a great touch. I’ll have to remember that!
One day I. Must try a cruise.
makes we want to try this cruise line!
I will be taking my first RCI cruise this August. This review was helpful for what to expect.
Just returned from a 5 day cruise on Royal Caribbean. I was happy with the product, but in my opinion the food is better on Holland America.
Interesting. I’m not a cruiser but the price sounds great! I do love diving liveaboards!
Never been on a cruise before, thanks for the review. We might consider one now
I love RCI overall. Sure, there are a few areas they could improve. But they are my go-to cruise line. I tried another cruise line once (won’t say them by name but they are known as the “party” ship) and was extremely disappointed. I have been on 5 RCI cruises and have never had a bad experience. Nicer ships (even the older ones) and the service has always been outstanding. Hope to see you on the high seas one day.
Try Celebrity next time. Their Aqua Class product is excellent!
I’ve only cruised twice. Once on our honeymoon 33+ years ago and we were dirt poor. Inside cabin with twin beds. The shower was a metal tube enclosure neither of us fit in. But, was a honeymoon that we still laugh about. (Never have treated ourselves to a proper “honeymoon” – whom food for thought). One other time on a mega boat for a business trip. Too many people crammed into too small a space. I doubt I’ll ever cruise again . . . Give me space and fewer people.
Love aft balconies. Best way to sail
I’ve always wanted to try RC.
I have only taken 1 cruise—to Alaska. I loved it for the Alaska attractions. I’m ready to try another!
My first cruise is coming up next September. Looking forward to it
Not my cup of tea….yet at least. Maybe one day.
You did it right with an aft facing cabin…..we just did it through the Suez and you get the best of both sides…..also commend you on taking RCL rather than cheapy Norwegian
Happy you enjoyed
RCI is outstanding for children and multi-generational groups. NCL has improved in recent years and now has an area called “The Haven” on some ships, which can compete with the Luxury cruise lines such as Oceania, Crystal, Azamara and Regent.
I am not a fan of Caribbean Cruises. I’d much rather go to an island and stay put. But if you want to see Alaska, or ports in Europe and Asia, cruising is a great way to see a lot without the hassles of packing and unpacking. If you want good food at a competitive price try Celebrity.
Many lines offer you the choice of Set dining times, or dining at your own pace.
RCIs Allure of the Seas is the world’s largest passenger cruise ship, and Quantum of the Seas is their newest ship and quite a technological feat.
Great review. My last cruise was on Celebrity from Sydney, Australia to New Zealand. The points game got me free first-class travel to Sydney, two free nights at the Park Hyatt Sydney, two free nights at the Auckland Hilton (along with free flights for sidetrips to Bangkok and Singapore with free hotels in each location) and free first-class return home to Florida. I love this game!
I have never taken a cruise, but your review has encouraged me to add it to my “Bucket List” Very Helpful information!
I don’t understand the appeal
Only have done 1 cruise before and got seasick. After seeing your review I might give it another try. We’re going to do a European river cruise in a few months though, less likely to get sick. Enjoy your comments about all things.
Loved the cruise ship review! At least a great price!
I love Celebrity, also owned by RCL. Have taken it six times. But now with kids, Disney is our line.
Looks like it was a fun trip.
Was thinking of taking this cruise, the review will help us decide. Thanks.
Rene, I’m do glad you’re cruising! I love it!
I just got back from my second cruise (first Holland America, second Carnival). I had a great time on both. I’m going to be doing another cruise next December on MSC and their ship The MSC Divina. She’s 3 years old and was in Miami when we were there. Her godmother is the one and only Sophia Lauren. The ship looks amazing and I can’t wait to sail in her.
sad to see your vision class ship experience had hits and misses
Excellently detailed review, with great photos! “The next best thing to being there!”
Have cruised on NCL, RCI, and Princess. The price point for Princess seems to be just right. You should try them for a comparison.
Great price. How did you find such a fantastic deal? I’d love to try Royal Caribbean and that kind of price would be the trigger for me.
Thanks for this cruise review in the boardingarea. It brings FRESH view about travel.
Have only cruised once for our 25th anniversary on NCL and it was fantastic; will choose them again for our 60th in five years.
Rene, very comprehensive review. I have have two great experiences on Norwegian Lines so maybe they need a second chance.
I have taken several cruises. We enjoy the relaxed pace on the water. It’s nice to unpack once.
Thank you for this review, DeltaPoints. I know nothing about cruising so your review is very helpful.
Loved Rene’s review. RCI really is a great cruise line!
I’d recommend spending the additional money and booking a cruise on Windstar. Small ships. You can visit the ship’s bridge, eat by yourselves every day, enjoy fabulous food and see small islands that big ships cannot visit. Romantic and fun. And no, I don’t work for them.
Maybe I will try a cruise after this review. Thanks, Rene and MJ
I may have to reconsider doing a cruise again now, after my first experience was so negative :O
Nice review. I never pay the tips that are added on automatically. The purser will take them off. I then tip as deserved.( I never use the dining room so why should I tip the maitre d.
Awesome review, you should try one of their bigger ships too!
My wife and I took our first cruise this past April on Royal Caribbean’s Liberty of The Seas. It was a good experience. I would not say it was one of our “best” vacations, but we did have a good time.
Nice review. I’ve never cruised, but my wife really enjoys it.
You all should join us on our October transatlantic crossing on Allure. That ship will blow your mind! Also, a boat has an Italian captain. A ship has a Norweigan captain.
Why did you not book through the Chase Ultimate Rewards Mall with your Chase points?
I have never been on a cruise, but may seriously look into it after reading MJ on Travel, Delta Points and listening my brother’s experiences on RCI.
Excellent review, liked the way you pointed out the good and the bad. Honest, not like a lot of cruise reviews are nowadays. Been on NCL and Carnival, may have to try RCL next.
Best cruise ever was New Zealand on Celebrity!
Great review! It’s been a while since I have taken a cruise!
Great review! My wife has always wanted to try out a cruise; however, it doesn’t sound like my idea of a vacation. Maybe someday an Alaskan cruise will fit in our plans…
Thanks for the info … I very much may be going on the Allure of the Seas in April and a lot of your mentions here are similar.
Never been on a cruise….between Rene and MJ’s reviews, I might have to try one…
nice review. We haven’t cruises in several years. So hard to decide where to spend that precious vacation times – on land or sea!
Great review. Never been on a cruise but may have to give it a try. Definitely with a balcony.
I still don’t think I could handle all those people even with a balcony to escape….
This doesn’t seem like a ringing endorsement.
I love cruising. Wish I had more vacation time 🙂
Having experienced NCL, RCI and Celebrity I feel I have a grasp of these cruise lines. Norwegian I enjoy because they encourage a freestyle experience. Their beds are comfortable and food decent in the both buffet and specialty restaurants. Celebrity is a step up in all areas. RCI we disliked. Like René my back was shot in record time and the food was often embaressingly indifferent.
All of our cruises have been with a balcony except one. I’m not sure I could do it any other way. For us it’s not about lying out during the day. Its during the nighttime positioning, the sound of the water through our open balcony door, just lulls us to a gentle and relaxing sleep. For us that and maybe a spa treatment or two, makes any cruise a delight.
Good review. RCI is a good cruise line. I have never been disappointed.
It’s been awhile since I’ve read a cruise review…made me miss the ocean.
We’ve cruised 8 or 9 times but never on RC; our best time ever was on Celebrity though!
Great review. My wife and I took Majesty of the Seas from Miami for the same destination. It was our first cruise –RCL — and we had a blast. Recommend pay as you go however on the drink package. Also recommend napping in the afternoon since most nightlife doesn’t start until 11 pm :). Like reading MJ and DeltaPoints!
Steve
My last cruise had a large back balcony and that sure makes a packed ship much more enjoyable. The food on every RCI cruise I took was blah.
Cruised once on Carnival. My girlfriend and some friends we went with loved it. I was indifferent. It was a great deal for four nights or so and all you can eat. I just prefer Flying somewhere and really seeing the city.
Good info. I always go back and forth on the drink packages.
I wanna go on a cruise!!!
I’ve always wondered about the drink packages. Good info
Nice review.
Nice ship, but HUGE!!!
Interesting review. I was thinking about RCI and NCL but it is disappointing to hear the food wasn’t that great. I wonder how things change for longer cruises.
Great review, making us rethink going on one soon!
Thanks for the great review Rene. This helped me to further solidify my current belief that I’m not the cruising type.
we recently took our first RCI cruise on Splendour of the Seas. Almost the same room as you (also vision class). Our balcony was fabulous. We had a great time and would highly recommend them. I agree the buffet food was to be avoided but we really liked the main dining room- though we did have a table for two. I had heard chops wasn’t worth it so this was our first cruise to not do a specialty restaurant.
I can’t believe you got such a good deal on a JS!
My wife and I prefer Celebrity. Great cruise line.
My wife and I have been on a few cruises, all with RCI, I have also been on Carnival many years ago. We enjoyed RCI, Carnival not so much. We took our children on a RCI cruise and they enjoyed it even more than we did, they have fantastic programs for children that occupy them all day long. This post has piqued my interest – but now I know I will only be happy with a balcony, now to talk my wife into going again 🙂
We have cruised twice, both on Norwegian, and had great experiences both times. I am hoping that my next cruise can be on a Quantum- or Oasis-class on RCI. Really seems like a lot of fun and looking forward to a more “connected” cruise.
Haven’t been on RCI or NCL, last cruise I took was on Crystal Serenity from South Africa to India. Years before I cruised on Carnival, but I don’t think anything can compare to a “normal” penthouse or any other room on Crystal, but the cost is significantly more than other cruise lines.
Love cruising, but only on the “tall ships”. Very casual, very fun, few people..the entire ship is your balcony!
Ok I’m sold. Having just spent a week in Jamaica watching the cruise ships pull in and out, maybe a little “on the water” time is due. Thanks for the post (and maybe the swag too?)
Never been on a cruise before but this makes me excited to try!
ive always wondered how the drink options work, thanks!
Sounds fun! I will try it next time!
I’ve never cruised but posts like this keep getting me closer.
I’ve never taken a cruise, and I probably won’t. Looking at the meal issues and the crowds during meal times; just doesn’t make me want to me stuck on the ship……
Great review so I could see how they compare to Holland America, my recent cruise to Alaska. Thnx!
Great review. I have never taken a cruise, but it sounds fun.
