Getting Healthy on the Road – A Work in Progress

I haven’t made a secret of the fact that I have Type 1 Diabetes here. In fact, I have a post category called “Diabetic Traveler” that I populate from time to time, usually with security experiences more so than general health. I’ve always done a fairly decent job managing my diabetes, but over the last two years, I would say that my “self management” grade has dropped from a solid A to a solid C. Just being “average” at this isn’t good enough, so I’ve been working on getting myself back together.

I just visited my doctor and my “a1c” is within .5 of goal…that’s progress. Now, I’ve got to keep picking at my weight, and that’s become a challenge with increased travel. Maybe it’s just me, but about the last thing I want to do when I get to the hotel in the evening after a day of travel is go to the gym, so I’ve been focused on rolling out of bed early and going to the gym….with some success, but I’m not quite disciplined enough to get up at 4:45am every morning just yet.

Perhaps I’m the only one with this problem, but in general, I’ve found that I eat more poorly when I’m traveling, so that is a focus area for me. Keeping alcohol consumption in check is another. With a renewed focus on eating better and living better…and getting to the gym at least 3 to 4 days per week, I’m thinking things should fall into place by my next doctor’s appointment, even with a lot of travel. What are some things that you do to stay healthy on the road?

Also type I and totally agree. Too much rich food and hotel exercise rooms are awful.

I love to run, but it’s really depressing to go to some of these hotel gyms. They can smell really interesting!

So lately, I tend to stick with burpees. Specifically, I’m doing the 100 burpee challenge since it requires participation every single day (for 100 days). It’s arguably the perfect combination of cardio and strength, you can do them in your room, and it’s such a huge adrenaline rush to realize you’re accomplishing a formidable goal.

Currently I’m on day 47 🙂 Look it up, let us know if you give it a try!!

My brother-in-law, who is a personal trainer in ATL, created a workout plan for me that I can do in my room. I hate to work out, so this had to be easy for me to keep it up. I pack an exercise band (which is so easy to pack, it takes up no space and it was cheap) and then I tie it to a door knob and do tons of strengthening exercises w/it. I also have the hotel empty out the mini-bar if I’m there more than a day or two and that removes temptation and allows me… Read more »

I try to keep myself as healthy as possible while on the road and its tough. But the one thing i find is i drink water as much as possible. Even with meals I will go for sparkling water over soda, juice or alcohol. The toughest thing is the exercise though I find that I am already moving about a lot more but to me the morning run in some places is as good if not better than the gym. Considering that in places like New York or DC there is so much to see while out running that the… Read more »
