This was a British Airways flight run by Finnair that was booked with American Airlines miles flying from Heathrow in England to Athens in Greece !
That gives you an indication of the almost unlimited ways that you can use your miles or points.
Boarding:
We boarded in the rain but there was no noticeable effect on the taxi out to the runway or the flight.
I was able to board early with my American Airlines status so I settled in and then checked out the toilet before we took off.
The toilet:
The loo was nice and clean and all in all quite a pleasant experience.
This was a standard Airbus A320 with 3+3 seating. The seat was rather close to my knees (I am 6’1″).
The flight was about 3 and 3/4 hours which is a little long to have the seat so close to my knees but the catering experience was nice so that helped to pass the time.
Food and drink:
Here is the menu that was in the seat pocket. They were charging for everything, even tea and coffee, unlike US flights which always have tea, coffee, sodas and water available for free.
Cadbury chocolate £1.80, shortbread £2.50.
The Prosecco was £8.00, all the spirits were about £6.00 and the mixers £3.00.
Tea and coffee was £2.90.
I chose a Three cheese and chutney sandwich and tea. Tom Kerridge, a highly respected British chef is behind the food choices available.
The sandwiches are not on this menu, I don’t remember if I ordered online or if it was an audible menu from the steward, The website is highlifeshop.com for pre-ordering.
The sandwich was fresh and very tasty. I would highly recommend the sandwiches on these flights, hopefully you have the same experience I did.
The tea and coffee are £2.90 which is about $3.80, rather expensive for a cuppa.
There was a charge on my card of $9.49 for the meal so that means the sandwich was about $5.70.
Safety card:
Finnair safety card for the A320 with very logical drawings and headings in english.
Conclusion:
I found using AA miles to be the easiest way to book my flight in the US. There might have been slightly cheaper flights available but booking with American Miles gave me priority.
All in all a very pleasant experience. Lovely food, slightly cramped in the A320 compared to the A321 and the Boeing 737-800 but a fine flying experience, oh and did I mention great food.
It amazes me how much better buy on board is outside the United States. Why can’t we do better?
I agree, there are all sorts of lovely goodies available on flights all over Europe.
