Review: Egyptair economy class from Dublin to Cairo on the A320neo

an airplane on the runway

I was heading out on a work trip to Cairo and only one airline flies non-stop between the cities. That is how I found myself in Egyptair economy class for the very first time.

Having flown into and out of Cairo Airport just nine months ago, I was well versed in what to expect. Before travel I managed to restrain myself from paying to select a seat, as it wouldn’t be something I could claim back from my employer.

Dublin Airport

Since my trip was fairly long, I had checked luggage with me. Luckily I recently made Star Alliance Gold, which meant I could check-in at the business class counter. My wait was a minute or so and then I was seen by the helpful agent.

I’d already checked in online and the system auto-assigned me 21K. While at the desk I asked if anyone was beside me and she said yes, so I asked if I could move to a seat without someone beside me. I was promptly moved to the exit row window, which was a bit of a score!

Egyptair Economy Class

I breezed through Fast-Track security in Dublin in seconds, and headed off to the 300 gates to wait. The Dublin Airport lounge is currently closed for renovations, so I sat near the gate for a good half an hour or so before boarding was called.

Once the boarding pass was scanned, it was down to the plane. Almost there, I arrived at a barrier and we stood there for a good while before being allowed to proceed.

While I was first on board, crew members were strategically placed all down the cabin, so I couldn’t get a whole cabin shot. The carpet on the floor seemed to have some kind of Christmas theme to it, which was intriguing.

The Exit Row

It’s been quite a while since I sat in the exit row on a flight. Pale blue pillows were placed on many of the seats, but not all. I took this to mean nobody in the middle seat next to me, but someone on the aisle.

Once boarding was complete, nobody was in my block of three – excellent! The video safety demonstration was played and we took to the sky and set course for Cairo. Naturally once the seatbelt sign turned off, someone moved to the aisle seat, but the middle was still free, so that was fine.

Egyptair Catering

Soon after take-off, the crew came by with the trolley offering drinks and the meal. I took a mango juice and a Pepsi, and elected to have the lamb meal. This turned out to be a good choice, as it was a pretty delicious mix of lamb and potato in a lovely sauce.

I devoured everything in front of me as it was all very good. Happily the crew didn’t leave us for hours waiting for the trays to be collected – they came through with impeccable timing to remove them.

Movies, another snack and the toilet

During the flight I watched two movies and pressed on in spite of some editing. One of them had certain swear words blanked out, as well as some cuts, while the other had the kissing between the two leads cut. They’d go in for the kiss and it would cut to them after the kiss, so you weren’t quite sure if they had kissed.

Since I had nothing else to do, I didn’t rage quit watching and just got on with it. Egyptair economy passengers are not permitted forward to use the posh loos, so I had to go down the back, wait a bit for someone to finish, before visiting the facilities. Thankfully they were nice and clean. From there it was a snack and a drink and we then landed in Cairo.

Overall Thoughts

Egyptair was a bit of a pleasant surprise, to tell you the truth. The cabin on the Airbus A320neo was pretty cute, and I would loved to have taken a picture of it. The seats were pretty standard and fine enough for the five and a half hour service between Dublin and Cairo.

I really like eating when flying, so I was happy with how tasty the food was, not to mention the drink selection. The airline doesn’t serve alcohol in any class, but I wouldn’t let that bother you. Overall, I was pleased with a trip that went like clockwork.
