Review: Egyptair business class from Cairo to Dublin on the A320neo

The Flight Detective
a row of seats in an airplane

My work has an economy class only policy on flights under seven hours, which this trip was. After enjoying the outbound flight from Dublin to Cairo in economy class, I decided I would place a bid to upgrade to Egyptair business class for the return.

In the interest of saving money, I bid the minimum amount which was US$175 (€150, £130, AU$245). A few days before the flight, I received an Instant Upgrade Offer, which was US$225. I decided to take it, as I wanted to guarantee being up front and not risk it.

Cairo Airport

Once I arrived at Cairo airport, I met my meet and assist guy and he whisked me through the business class / Star Alliance Gold Track security check into the terminal. From there it was off to check-in which was completed very quickly. Next, he escorted me to Passport control and bid me farewell. I would strongly recommend using these services in Cairo, as it makes the whole experience seamless.

While I checked in at Terminal 3, the gate for the Dublin flight is in Terminal 2. That meant a nice morning walk to get some steps in before going through security screening.

The Egyptair Lounge in Terminal 2

When I was last in Terminal 2, I was flying British Airways to London. They use the Ahlein Lounge, which is further into the lounge precinct than the lounge Egyptair uses. You literally walk through this lounge to get to the other lounge, so I’d passed through here before.

One side is where the food is, which was rather busy, and the other side is where I sat. There is a satisfactory array of food available and it’s comfortable enough, but nothing to write home about. I left the lounge and headed to my gate and arrived about a minute before they called business class passengers to board. Result!

Airbus A320neo – SU-GFM
Seat: Business Class 11A
Departure: 08:25 Arrival: 12:20

We were bussed out to the aircraft, which was parked on a remote stand. For a change I managed to place myself strategically on the bus and was first up the stairs and on board, so I could get some pictures.

Egyptair Business Class Cabin

The aircraft features 16 business class seats arranged in pairs with a very generous 46″ of pitch. The muted colour scheme feels nice and relaxing, plus it looks good in my opinion.

Spaciousness is a hallmark of the premium classes and there is plenty here. I thought the little stickers that advise the crew when to wake you were pretty cute! I didn’t use mine as it was a day flight and I had no intention of sleeping, but they’re a nice thought.

Safety On Board and a Welcome Drink

While waiting for the buses to arrive to bring more people to the aircraft, I had a look at the safety card. It’s always worth a little look just to be sure of where everything is in case you need it.

Egyptair don’t serve alcohol on board their flights. Rather than this being a horrifying experience to be avoided at all costs, it’s actually quite fine. The quality of the various other drinks is elevated as a result and that suits me very well.

Coffee Time

Once everyone was on board, we took to the sky above Cairo. I was quite delighted that we passed by the Pyramids at Giza – it doesn’t get much more Egyptian than that!

The first service on the morning Cairo to Dublin flight is a drinks service. Offered tea or coffee, I went for a Latte and when it came I also received a cookie. Happily the coffee was impressive, so I enjoyed it very much.

Today’s Menu

Unexpectedly, nothing else happened for quite some time. Window blinds were closed, so I settled in and watched a movie. A couple of hours passed and then the crew came by with menus.

Lunch! What a surprise! Most airlines would offer breakfast on a flight departing at 08:25 and I was wondering what it would be like. How smart to offer lunch instead!

A Delicious Lunch

I think pretty much everyone chose the “Grilled beef steak with brown sauce”, so I ordered that. Shortly afterwards the crew came back to me and a few others as there were none left. Instead, I went for the “Dried plum and apricot stuffed turkey roulade with brown sauce served with mashed sweet potatoes, sauteed mushrooms, broccoli and sauteed red cabbage” (what is it with brown sauce by the way!). Everyone received the same starters, which were a salad and “Marinated shrimps and marinated baby octopus with quinoa and pepper salad, roasted pumpkin cubes and basil olive oil.”

Octopus is a rare thing to find on my plate, so I thought the offered starter was an interesting choice. Turns out the dish was very nice, as was the main meal. It was strange to get the cheese – the crew came through offering the single plate around to everyone as they “had one spare” – I was last to be asked so took one for the team. Luckily it was tasty, as was the delectable lemon tart. Yum!

The end of a lovely flight

Once everything was cleared away, I continued watching movies to pass the time. On the drinks menu was “Malt beverage” and I had no idea what that was so I ordered one.

That drink tasted like beer and was quite frankly one of the grossest things I’ve had in my life. I didn’t finish it, but I do know what the mystery malt beverage is! Not too long after we descended and landed in Dublin without incident.

Overall Thoughts

Egyptair business class between Cairo and Dublin is a really nice experience. The seats are large and spacious and there is plenty of room between rows. Having pillows, blankets, an amenity kit and those little stickers meant I felt like I was getting the works and good value for my upgrade money.

Our crew were very pleasant and happy to get anything I needed. The food was amazing and I liked how we received proper courses as the service. Honestly, I wish I had not flown British Airways in Club Europe from Cairo to London the last time I was there, as Egyptair is frankly much better from a seat and food perspective.

I must say, I’ll definitely fly Egyptair business class again. What do you think of this flight? Have you flown up front with the Egyptian airline before? What was that like? Thank you for reading and if you have any comments or questions, please leave them below.
