The Dutch Railways – or Nederlandse Spoorwegen to use the local lingo – offer both First Class and Second Class travel. These are handily denoted on the outside of carriages by a number 1 or a number 2.
On a recent visit to the country, I decided to take the plunge and upgrade to First Class. I was travelling from Roosendaal to Schiphol Airport and the additional cost was €15.00.
Dutch Trains First Class
There are two types of Dutch trains that I’ve noticed. One type are the double decker ones, which seem older, and there are also single deck trains which appear to be more of an express service.
Both offer first class, which on the double deck trains is a small glassed off area in a second class carriage. The seats are also two by one, but that’s about the only difference.
Otherwise, there is mood lighting, pull down trays and a generally more pleasant environment. Not that Second Class is much worse, the trains are all comfortable and well kept, it’s just First Class is nicer.
Overall Thoughts
Is it worth €15 more for a journey of one hour and 20 minutes? Well, it depends. For me, I was quite tired after a busy weekend and wanted to avoid people as much as possible. Therefore the extra space was well worth it for the price.
What do you think? Would you be prepared to pay that extra just for more space? When wouldn’t you pay it? Thank you for reading and if you have any comments or questions, please leave them below.
