Hotel Review: The Dude Berlin, a boutique oasis in the city

The Dude Hotel in Berlin advertises itself as one of the few true boutique hotels in the city. With just 27 rooms, you feel as though you are staying in a chic city dwelling rather than a hotel.

A friend and I stayed for three nights just before Easter. If you’re a regular reader, you’ll recall a story about a hotel that kept dropping their price. This was the one!

Arrival and Check-in

When coming from Schönefeld Airport SXF (and presumably Berlin Brandenberg BER if it ever opens!), you alight at Jannowitzbrücke station and from there it’s an easy 10 minute walk to The Dude. We arrived at midday and the friendly desk person took our bags and told us to come back at 3pm, which is check-in time.

Handily the hotel is located right between the Berlin underground (U-Bahn) stations Märkisches Museum and Heinrich-Heine-Straße which is extremely convenient. After exploring the city and having lunch we returned to check in. This was quick and painless and even better our bags were already up in our room. I like that kind of service!

The Dude Room 34

We chose a Grande Double Room which is the highest category before the Suite. The room is 24 metres square and features a large firm bed which is 180cm x 200cm. This has two separate duvets which is quite puzzling but means you can sleep totally undisturbed by the person next to you.

A great feature of the room, apart from the large windows overlooking the quiet street, were the two red leather arm chairs. A lot of rooms have just one comfy seat which is not great when travelling as a pair, so this was a plus. There is also many clothes hangers, iron and ironing board provided. Happily there is a Bose sound bar under the television meaning you can listen to music from your device. You can also use it for the TV which does feature international channels.

Coffee and Minibar

Another great design feature is the wooden box full of drawers. It’s really colourful which I find quite attractive as a general rule. Inside is the fridge, room safe, hair dryer, complimentary slippers and on top are the mini bar items and Nespresso machine.

Two capsules are provided for the Nespresso machine, and extra ones are obtained from The Dude reception. These cost €1 extra for each time they’re replaced, so beware coffee lovers! Enormous wine glasses are provided as well as some really heavy and good quality glasses. The minibar prices are not cheap, so we went to the grocery store Lidl on the other side of Jannowitzbrücke station and picked up bottles of water, chocolate and snacks there to tide us over.

A Pleasant Bathroom at The Dude

Hotels live or die by their beds and bathrooms and happily the bathroom at The Dude was fine. It features a toilet, shower and basin with refillable bottles of products rather than individual ones. This is very environmentally friendly, though it did surprise me.

A heated towel rack is also provided behind the door which keeps the towels ready for action. The toilet flush is worth passing remark on as you press the big button then you can press it again to stop it which is good if you don’t need to waste so much water.

Overall Thoughts

Understated and classy is how I would describe The Dude Hotel in Berlin. Getting recommendations from Reception for restaurants was easy and the service was always charmingly polite.

The hotels location on a quiet street in a pleasant neighbourhood in the middle of the city also can’t be beat, especially as it is so well situated for public transport or walking. I’d recommend the hotel and would stay here again.
