The Amex Platinum Card underwent a huge refresh with much fanfare last month. As part of the refresh, Amex enhanced the Digital Entertainment credit benefit on the card.

Amex Platinum Card: Digital Entertainment Credit

With the Digtial Entertainment Credit on the American Express Platinum Card, you’ll earn up to $25 every month in statement credits when you make purchases with one of their following partners:

  • Disney+
  • ESPN+
  • Hulu
  • The New York Times
  • Paramount+
  • Peacock
  • The Wall Street Journal
  • YouTube

YouTube is the newest entrant to this list. Now, the way this credit works is that, as per the terms and conditions, you can use this credit to pay for:

  • YouTube TV
  • YouTube Premium
  • YouTube Music

If you look at the terms and conditions closely, you’ll find one thing that’s really vital here:

Eligible purchases do not include subscriptions bundled with cable services or purchased through third parties advertising services or gift cards.

The terms and conditions of the Digital Entertainment Credit benefit clearly outline that it only works on purchases made directly.

Only valid on eligible purchases charged directly with the following partners: Disney+, ESPN+, Hulu, The New York Times, Paramount+, Peacock, The Wall Street Journal, and YouTube. Age minimums and other restrictions apply to use of each partner’s services; see each partner’s terms and conditions for more information.

While it may seem pretty obvious to most people, some tend to overlook the terms and conditions and instead make subsriptions through the app store. As per this Reddit post, this user found it the hard way as the credit didn’t post after the purchase was made through the Google Play Store.

Do *not* subscribe to Youtube Premium through the Google Play store. The credit only works if you subscribe through the Youtube Web Site.

I subscribed through the play store, and when the credit didn’t post I started a chat with Amex. They said if it still didn’t post, chat again in a few days and they would review for a manual credit.

Well I wasted 20 minutes talking to “Luke” before he finally got around to telling me I should’ve read the terms, and he wasn’t going to credit me.

He’s right, I should’ve read the terms. But I am still quite disappointed in American Express.

The Pundit’s Mantra

Over the years, the Digital Entertainment credit has worked perfectly fine since I’ve made direct purchases with the Wall Street Journal by purchasing a subscription. I’ve now switched to YouTube premium by directly purchasing a subscription from the Youtube website.

While this may seem obvious to many of us in this space, it always helps to review the terms and conditions once before making a purchase, especially when a card issuer has just launched the benefit anew.

How do you use the Digital Entertainment Credit benefit on the Amex Platinum Card? Tell us in the comments section.

  1. I’ve always had the Hulu/Dis/ESPN premium bundle but its going up in price to $29.99.. since I don’t watch the sports much, I downgraded to a Hulu/Disney basic and added on YT Premium which will give me what I want and use up the credit.
