Chase World of Hyatt Card vs Chase Marriott Bonvoy Boundless Card

Avatar
Travel easier today with either of these great mid-tier hotel cards!

The Chase World of Hyatt Card and the Chase Marriott Bonvoy Boundless Card are two great mid-tier hotel cards. They both offer great opportunities for hotel dwellers and general travelers. However, only one card is the better overall option.

Sign-Up Bonus

The World of Hyatt Card offers a two-part sign-up bonus. The first part offers 25,000 Hyatt points if you spend $3,000 within the first three months. Moreover, the second part offers another 25,000 points if you spend a total of $6,000 within the first six months. That’s a total of 50,000 Hyatt points!

Conversely, the Marriott Boundless Card offers a more traditional sign-up bonus. You will receive 75,000 Marriott points if you spend $3,000 within the first three months.

The winner of this category depends on a few different factors. Primarily, the value of points must be considered. Hyatt points are more valuable than Marriott points. In other words, you will receive more value from the World of Hyatt Card’s bonus based on value of points. This assumes that you can earn both bonuses in full.

However, you will receive either 25,000 Hyatt points or the entire Boundless Card’s bonus if you spend between $3,000 and $5,999 within a six-month period. The Marriott Boundless Card wins the category for this group.

Another factor that must be considered is your loyalty to either hotel brand. Marriott loyalists would be able to use the Marriott Bonvoy Card’s bonus more than its competitor. Thus, that bonus is better for them. The same logic applies for Hyatt loyalists and the World of Hyatt Card.

Earning

The World of Hyatt Card earns 9.5x Hyatt points at World of Hyatt hotels. That’s broken down as follows:

  • 5x points for having membership
  • 4x points for having the credit card
  • 5x points for having Discoverist Status

But that’s not all! The World of Hyatt Card also earns 2x points for Dining, Gym Memberships, Local Commuter Transit, and Airline Tickets. These categories make the World of Hyatt Card one of the best hotel cards for general travelers. Furthermore, the World of Hyatt Card earns just one point per dollar on non-bonus expenses.

Conversely, the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless Card has a different earning structure. It earns 6x Marriott points at Marriott hotels and 2x points per dollar on non-bonus expenses. This card has a simple earning structure, but that does not mean it’s good. The Marriott Bonvoy Boundless Card should be used for Marriott purchases only as opposed to general spend.

In essence, the World of Hyatt Card has a much better earning structure than its competitor and wins the category handily.

Burning

Both cards in comparison are mid-tier hotel cards. Therefore, the best ways to use up their points is at their respective hotel brands. Both cards come with other ways to redeem points. However, they will provide you less value than using them directly.

Perks

Both of these mid-tier hotel cards come with some perks that offset their $95 annual fees. Either of them could be long-term keeper cards, depending on your loyalty to either brand.

Complimentary Status

You will receive Hyatt Discoverist Status with the World of Hyatt Card. This lowest earned level of status comes with the following perks:

  • Free Wi-Fi
  • Complimentary continental breakfast (only at certain Hyatt Place hotels in Europe, Africa, and Asia)
  • Complimentary room upgrades (up to Preferred room; if available)
  • Early (starting at 12 pm) check in
  • Late (until 2 pm) check out.
  • One free bottle of water per day

Normally, you would have to stay at least 10 nights per year to earn Discoverist Status organically. Therefore, getting it automatically with the World of Hyatt card is a fantastic deal.

Conversely, the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless Card comes with Marriott Silver Elite Status. Unfortunately, Silver Elite Status does not get you much, despite Marriott’s requirement of 10 nights just to earn it. All you get is a 10% points bonus for Marriott purchases. Room rates and gift shop purchases are included.

No Foreign Transaction Fees

Neither card comes with foreign transactions fees, meaning that you will save 3% on your international transactions.

Additional Benefits That Come With the World of Hyatt Card

The sub-heading says it all. The World of Hyatt Card comes with more benefits and therefore wins the category.

Free Nights

The World of Hyatt Card offers one free night every year after your cardmember anniversary. In other words, you will get a free night after every 12 months you hold the card. This free night is limited to Category 1-4 properties.

You can also receive another free night after spending $15,000 per anniversary year. This means that you need to have your card for one year and then spend $15,000 to get the second free night.

Qualifying Night Credits

For each year you have the card, you will receive five qualifying night credits toward your next tier status. You will also earn two qualifying night credits toward your next tier status after every $5,000 spent on the card.

These night credits make it possible to earn Hyatt Explorist and Globalist Status if you hold the card long enough or spend enough on them. This gives Hyatt loyalists incentive to strive for higher status.

Final Draw

The Chase World of Hyatt Card and the Chase Marriott Bonvoy Boundless Card are two great options for travelers who often stay at hotels. However, the World of Hyatt Card is the better overall credit card. This is because it has a better earning structure and more perks than the Marriott Boundless Card.

But that Marriott has way more properties worldwide than Hyatt does. But there is a plethora of other cards out there that are better for Marriott loyalists. Nonetheless, its unfortunate that Marriott’s own co-branded card does not better serve the needs of their customers.

    1. Hi Playa Laguna,

Thanks for pointing out that error. The WOH card offers 2x on airline tickets, but not grocery stores. I wish it did too.

    1. Hi Andrew,

Certain Hyatt Place hotels in Europe, Africa, and Asia offer breakfast for Discoverist members. But most don’t. Thanks for pointing that out. I have updated the post.
