Chase refreshed the Chase Sapphire Reserve card earlier this year. They introduced a slew of new benefits, but also increased the annual fee from $550 to $795. While the card has a lot of new benefits that people like, the annual fee may be a major point of contention for many people when the card comes up for renewal. It never hurts to call the card issuer and request a retention offer. One such cardholder got a really sweet retention offer on the card.

Chase Sapphire Reserve Retention Bonus

As per this poster NVTahoe on Reddit, Chase offered him a $400 retention offer on the Chase Sapphire Reserve card. Here’s a screenshot posted on the forum.

That’s a 50% discount on the annual fee

I saw a few posts about long time customers getting retention offers and I got a $400 statement credit added when I called. Adding details so others could save on the fee this year. Planning on downgrading, now will wait until next year since the card is free basically this year. Wasn’t expecting it to the this high, I saw $300 on this channel they offered others and was still planning to downgrade. Now with the $300 travel, StubHub (26’), Peloton, Apple TV, and Lyft credits makes sense to hold until Dec 26’

How I asked:

  • Called and in a very polite way said I saw the new fee and it’s much higher than I expected. I would like a retention offer or would downgrade the card today. Could you look at see if I have anything.
  • They asked what main features I would use the reserve card for, I simply said I have the Amex plat and the value for that card is much better than the reserve’s value. I would only really use the card for some travel purchases and food purchases.
  • The support rep said she could offer me a $400 statement credit to keep the card, I took the offer.

Used 2025:

  • I unlocked the $75k spend and have used all the credits. (1) $500 SW credit (2) $250 shop credit on an apple purchase (3) updated hotel status and Hertz presidents circle. -I already used the $150 StubHub -I used the Peloton credits, Apple TV -I used the $300 travel already

Unused: 2025 -The edit credit, not planning on using this -The restaurant credit, using it this weekend in San Diego

My details:

  • Reserve Customer since 2016
  • Never keep a balance

The Pundit’s Mantra

While there’s no guarantee that you’ll get a retention offer this high or get any offer at all, there’s no harm in asking. While each individual situation is different, here are a few factors that may have helped this cardholder present his case:

  • Long time cardholder (since 2016)
  • High spend (Over $75,000 annually)
  • Never carried a balance (clean balance and payment record)

I downgraded from the Sapphire Reserve to the Preferred when Chase first increased the annual fee on the card from $450 to $550. Ever since, I’ve happily carried the Sapphire Preferred in my wallet is my go-to Chase card for travel related spend.
