Earlier this week, I wrote about the limited time offers on two of Chase’s Ink Business credit cards ending soon. However, there’s one aspect that was overlooked. Chase has now added more welcome bonus restrictions to the offer.

New Chase Welcome Bonus Restrictions

While the limited time offers are no longer available, there’s new language added to the card’s welcome bonus eligibility criteria.

“The new cardmember bonus may not be available to you if you have ever had this card or any other Chase for Business card without an annual fee. We may also consider factors pertinent to your business in determining your bonus eligibility.”

In short, if you have one, you cannot get the other. Chase only has two no annual fee Business credit cards. If you’ve received the welcome bonus for the Ink Business Cash, then you won’t be eligible for the welcome bonus on the Ink Business Unlimited card and vice versa.

Chase seems to be taking their cue from Amex. Such ‘family’ bonus restrictions are very common for Amex’s cards. Here are a few examples.

Amex’s Restrictions

On the Amex Gold Card, you are not eligible for the welcome bonus if you’ve received a welcome bonus from the same family. That family is comprised of all the different versions of the Amex Platinum Card.

“You may not be eligible to receive a welcome offer if you have or have had this Card, the Premier Rewards Gold Card, the Platinum Card®, the Platinum Card® from American Express Exclusively for Charles Schwab, the Platinum Card® from American Express Exclusively for Morgan Stanley or previous versions of these Cards. You also may not be eligible to receive a welcome offer based on various factors, such as your history with credit card balance transfers, your history as an American Express Card Member, the number of credit cards that you have opened and closed and other factors. If you are not eligible for a welcome offer, we will notify you prior to processing your application so you have the option to withdraw your application.”

American Express also enforces similar restrictions on many of their co-branded credit cards.

“You may not be eligible to receive a welcome offer if you have or have had this Card, the Delta SkyMiles® Platinum American Express Card, the Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card or previous versions of these Cards.

The Pundit’s Mantra

Given the trend over the year, it’s not surprise that Chase has added this language to their lineup of no annual fee for business credit cards. Chase already set the precedent earlier in the year by adding more restrictions to their Sapphire cards, by putting the ‘One Sapphire Rule’ into effect.
