Just a few days back, I’d written about some of the rumors about a brand new Amex credit card being launched very soon. The card is now live on the American Express website and is open for new applicants.

New Amex Credit Card: Graphite Business Cash Unlimited Card

The Graphite Business Card Unlimited Card is a brand new product offered by American Express. Unlike some of their other cards like the Blue Business Plus Card that helps you earn Membership Rewards Points, this is a cash back card that rewards you in the form of ‘reward dollars’. Reward dollars are nothing but simple cash back. 1 reward dollar = $1 in cash back.

Welcome Bonus

With this introductory offer, you can earn $1,500. You’ll earn the welcome bonus once you spend $50,000 in the fist 6 months of card membership. While this may look like a steep requirement initially, it should be easy to meet for many business owners who can put at least a minimum of $8,334 on the card during every month.

Reward Dollars

Amex will deposit reward dollars into your account once you meet the required spend. Once the reward dollars are deposited into your account, you have a couple of options. You can directly redeem them as a statement credit to your card account for a future statement or use the credits for a purchase on Amazon.com. Before you redeem with Amazon, you will first need to link your card account to your Amazon.com account.

The Basic Card Member can redeem Reward Dollars for statement credits or for eligible items at Amazon.com checkout. The Basic Card Member must link their Card Account to their Amazon.com account in order to use Reward Dollars at Amazon.com. When a Basic Card Member uses Reward Dollars at Amazon.com, we will charge their Card Account for the purchase, deduct the Reward Dollars from the available Reward Dollars on their Card Account, and apply a credit to their Card Account to reflect the Reward Dollars used. If the Reward Dollars used do not cover the full cost of the purchase, the difference will remain charged to the Basic Card Member’s Card Account unless they pay the difference with an Amazon Gift Card.

To link the Reward Dollars on your Card Account to your Amazon.com account, you must first add your eligible Card Account to your payment methods on your Amazon.com account and then you can link the Reward Dollars on your Card Account to your Amazon.com account by either: (a) making a purchase with your eligible Card Account at Amazon.com; or (b) selecting Learn More next to your eligible Card Account at checkout and completing the steps.

Authorized Users or Employee Card Members

You can add additional employee card members. However, there’s a $95 annual fee for every employee you add. You can add up to a maximum of 99 employee card members. You also have the option for going for a $0 annual fee business expense card. Only the primary card member can redeem reward dollars once they link their accounts.

Earning Reward Dollars

  • You will earn 2% cash back on all your eligible purchases. There’s no upper limit for this.
  • You can earn 5% cash back on flights and prepaid hotels you book with Amex Travel. Similar to the 2% cash back benefit, there’s no upper limit for the 5% cash back benefit as well.

The annual fee for the card is $295.

Extra Rewards For Big Spenders

Similar to the benefit on the Business Platinum Card, cardmembers will earn up to $2,400 in American Express One AP Statement Credits for use in the next calendar year once they spend $250,000 in purchases in the previous calendar year.

In addition to the cash back rewards and the welcome bonus, the card also offers these benefits and protections:

  • No foreign transaction fees
  • Purchase Protection, Return Protection and Extended Warranty
  • Car Rental Loss & Damage Insurance

The Pundit’s Mantra

Overall, this card is a great option if you’re a business that spends heavily and is looking primarily for cash back rewards. The earning rate is simple at a flat 2% on all purchases. You can sweeten the deal if you make frequent purchases with Amex Travel as well. For points and miles enthusiasts, there’s little to cheer as you can only earn statement credits.
