Review: British Airways Lounge Washington Dulles

British Airways operate their own lounge at Washington Dulles, which is also used by Aer Lingus. I was departing for Dublin on the Irish airline and used this lounge before my flight.

For some reason the Aer Lingus website says the lounge is open until 17:00, but it is open much later than that. With the last BA departures not leaving until 22:45 in Summer and 21:45 in Winter, the lounge attendant assured me it was open way past 17:00 all the time.

Concourse B

When you alight from the underground AeroTrain from the main terminal in Concourse B, the lounge is right there. It’s very easy to spot with its navy blue surround.

The lounge is located above the main area, so when you walk up to it, there’s a lift. This takes you upstairs where you can check in with the attendant stationed there to keep the rabble out.

The self-service drinks and snacks

Upon entering the lounge, you are presented with a long corridor. Seats against a window overlooking the terminal interior are placed along it and about half way down you can find a drinks area.

I have to say the cookies were rather delicious – I treated myself to two or three. You can make your own trifle, and choose various wines and other drinks. There was no Champagne in sight, but I also wasn’t chasing it, so who knows if you can get it or not.

Toilet time!

Slightly tucked away are the toilets, which are clean and modern enough, as you would expect. These contained cubicles, urinals and presented well.

There was nothing that struck me as remarkable about the products on offer. Mirrors meant the space was quite bright, and there were no unpleasant odours or surprises.

Washington Dulles Dining

Happily this lounge also has one side which overlooks the airport action. Placed so that you can see the iconic Eero Saarinen main terminal, this area is filled with tables to sit at and dine. It also contains the buffet.

First up is the cold buffet. This featured Aged cheddar cheese, blue cheese, grapes, Genoa salami, Mortadella, Hummus sumac and dill marinated cucumbers. In addition, you can find pita crisps, butter, apricot preserves, marinated olives, dried apples, gherkins, whole grain mustard, assorted crackers and assorted rolls. Next are the salads. You can choose from a Smoked salmon Nicoise salad with Dijon vinaigrette, or an Heirloom tomato and mozzarella salad with summer peaches and white balsamic vinaigrette. There is also a Green beans with tamari miso dressing pickled ginger and Thai basil salad, and a Za’atar chickpea salad with roasted red pepper and lemon tahini vinaigrette salad. Finally, you can have a Watermelon and feta salad with baby spinach and mint vinaigrette or a “Cacio e pepe” new potato salad and Baby mixed lettuces. For toppings you can choose from Heirloom cherry tomato, cucumbers, sliced radish, crispy onion, garlic croutons, raisins or dried cherries. Dressings are white balsamic, green goddess, olive oil and balsamic vinegar. Oh how I wish I loved salad! Naturally there is also a hot buffet featuring the following delicious choices. Mustard honey BBQ chicken, Summer ratatouille with ricotta ravioli baby zucchini and patty pans, Red pepper pesto, Broccoli with garlic and olive oil, Lemon herb Carolina Gold rice, and Cauliflower cheese with cheddar. You can also find hot sauce and bread and butter pickles. Yum! Finally, you can go light and have soup which was corn bisque and with it you could have crispy bacon and Jalapeno corn bread. There are also sandwiches, billed as Tabbouleh and vegetable wrap with red pepper pesto or a Summer herb chicken salad with mint and cucumber on a baguette. Honestly, there is plenty of choice for even the fussiest eater. I elected not to have any of it, as I was planning to stuff myself on the flight, which turned out to be a good idea as the food I had on Aer Lingus was divine!

Overall Thoughts

The last time I was in the British Airways lounge at Washington Dulles was when I flew First Class on the A380. That time I got to use the special Concorde Dining Room, which I really liked.

All in all the BA lounge is really quite decent, which you would expect from an airline that fancies itself among the world’s best. I had a very pleasant stay and would happily spend time there again.
