If the recent Crowdstrike outage was an example of just how dependent we are on technology in our day to day lives, then this most recent AWS outage today has only underscored that very point. Multiple applications and services went down at the same time due to an AWS outage, recovering a tad bit by Monday morning. Even airlines were not spared as Delta and United reported issues. Several platforms like Signal, Duolingo, Roblox and Snapchat had also been affected.

AWS Outage Affects Airlines

As per CNBC, the AWS outage also affected airlines, with passengers reporting issues while checking in or making reservations. Customers also reported facing issues at while trying to drop off their bags.

Airline websites, including those for Delta Air Lines and United Airlines, were affected during Monday’s hourslong disruption of Amazon Web Services, the massive cloud computing provider, with some customers complaining they were unable to access flight check-in functions or their reservations.

Some reservations were showing up on airline apps, while customers complained on social media that they couldn’t check in or drop off bags, for several hours.

Both United and Delta confirmed to CNBC that their operations had been affected due to the outage, but mentioned that the incident only resulted in minor delays.

United told CNBC some of its internal systems were temporarily affected by the outage and that it was using backups to end the disruption. The airline said “our teams are working to get our customers on their way.”

Delta said mid-morning it had some “minor” delays on Monday because of the outage but that it did not “anticipate any significant customer impact moving forward as a result of this event.”

The Pundit’s Mantra

As the US Government continues to remain in a shutdown, this outage couldn’t have possibly come at a worse time. Just a few days back, I wrote about how the government shutdown was affecting critical services like air traffic control. Now, with this latest outage, we’re seeing passengers getting affected as they’re having a tough time performing basic tasks like making reservations or checking in online.
