One of the best things about the world of miles and points is the ability to transfer credit card points to airlines and hotels. For a long time, Amex and Chase dominated the transferable points space. Over the last few years, the likes of Capital One and Citi have also entered the fray. The most recent entrant into the space has been Bilt, offering points transfer opportunities to partners that many of their competitors don’t offer. Now, it seems like Bilt is likely to get yet another upgrade in the transferable points peking order.

New Points Transfer Opportunity

As per Doctor of Credit, you will soon be able to convert your Rakuten points into Bilt points.

Rakuten is a shopping portal and at the moment, you can convert your Rakuten cashback into Amex Membership Rewards points. As per the leak, you’ll need to choose between Bilt and Amex Membership Rewards points moving forward. However, we don’t have any more details about possible transfer ratios.

Why does this matter? Rakuten offers some amazing opportunities to earn miles and points in some astonishing multiples. So, for example, a brand is offering 15x through the portal, now those points could be converted into Bilt points. In essence, your points could be transferred to any of Bilt’s partners once you convert your Rakuten cash back into Bilt points:

  • Avianca Lifemiles -1:1

  • United MileagePlus -1:1
  • Air France/KLM Flying Blue -1:1

The Pundit’s Mantra

Since this is a leak, we don’t have any official confirmation yet. However, given that this information was obtained from Rakuten’s own website, there’s a good chance that this is something that has been in the works. Once this comes to fruition, it will indeed give people a lot of options, especially if they’re sitting on a sizable points balance with Bilt, especially if you’re looking to convert your points into currencies like Atmos Rewards, World of Hyatt and Japan Airlines.

Once this materializes, would you be tempted to switch your Rakuten shopping bonuses from American Express Membership Rewards points to Bilt Rewards points? Tell us in the comments section.
