Amex showing pre-approved offers after you log in

After a brief lull, we’ve seen banks come up with some interesting card offers off late. On of the most interesting things about the miles and points game is that you have a lot of room to be creative. If you’re looking for a great sign-up bonus, you can ensure that you’ll get the best possible bonus every time when you apply. Similarly, card issuers also send customers targeted offers for their products. After logging into my Amex account, I saw a sign-up bonus offer for which I was pre-approved.

Amex Pre-Approved Offers

The current offer that popped up in my account was for the Blue Cash Preferred Card by Amex. With this offer, I’d get a sign-up bonus of $300 after I spend $3,000 in the first 6 months. This offer also carries an intro APR of 0% for the first 12 months, with no annual fee for the first year. However, the $95 annual fee will be applied after the first year.

After clicking on the Apply Now button, the actual application page shows up, with many of the fields already filled out.

Not a great offer IMO

At the end of the application, Amex states its standard disclaimer for pre-approved offers.

Pre-approved, but should I take it?

I decided to pass. When it comes to Amex cards, I love my Membership Rewards points. I primarily book most of my hotel stays with Hilton. Therefore, I’m often on the lookout for lucrative card offers that give me the ability to quickly rack up Membership Rewards points or Hilton Honors points.

The Pundit’s Mantra

Not all credit offers are created equal. In certain cases, an issuer may only say that you’re pre-qualified. In short, you satisfy certain criteria which prompted the card issuer to send you that offer. However, the card issuer cannot guarantee that they will approve you for that offer. On the other hand, a pre-approved offer means that the card issuer has already done all the necessary checks and offered you a bonus for which they will approve you once as soon as you apply.
