Last year, the American Express Platinum Card was refreshed. American Express a lot of new benefits and credits to the card, but also increased the annual fee to $895. P2’s annual fee was just billed on the card. We decided to check if a retention offer was available, after my recent unsuccessful attempt.
American Express Platinum Card Retention Offer
P2 reached out to American Express for a retention offer via chat. At the outset, the chat agent listed out all the different benefits that the card has and what its new benefits justify the higher annual fee. P2 listed her reasoning for thinking about canceling the card, after carrying the card for many years.
At the end of the chat, the rep offered a retention bonus as follows: Spend $3,000 in 3 months and you’ll earn 20,000 Membership Rewards points. While not a very high retention offer, P2 accepted the offer and renewed the card for another year.

The Pundit’s Mantra
Overall, while not extraodinary, this was a decent retention offer to keep the card open for another year. The other option was to get a $200 statement credit instead of 20,000 points after spending $3,000 in 3 months. P2 opted to keep the card and take the offer for 20,000 Membership Rewards points.
