Last Fall, American Express revamped both personal and business versions of their Platinum cards. The consumer version also has an annual fee of $895 just like the business version. When Amex revamped the product, they introduced a variable welcome bonus on the Amex Platinum Card. Initially, you could earn up to 175,000 American Express Membership Rewards points as a welcome bonus. However, we saw several conflicting reports. Some users got a 100,000 points bonus, while other got a mere 50,000 points bonus.

Amex Platinum Card: Spent 2x to Get the Bonus

With this latest update, you’ll now be able to earn up to 175,000 American Express Membership Rewards points on the Amex Platinum Card. However, you’ll now have to spend $12,000 instead of the previous $6,000 in the first 6 months of card membership.

Bear in mind that, Amex’s welcome bonus restrictions still apply.

“You may not be eligible to receive a welcome offer if you have or have had this Card, the Platinum Card® from American Express Exclusively for Charles Schwab, the Platinum Card® from American Express Exclusively for Morgan Stanley or previous versions of these Cards. You also may not be eligible to receive a welcome offer based on various factors, such as your history with credit card balance transfers, your history as an American Express Card Member, the number of credit cards that you have opened and closed and other factors. If you are not eligible for a welcome offer, we will notify you prior to processing your application so you have the option to withdraw your application.”

The Pundit’s Mantra

Since I already have the Charles Schwab version of the Amex Platinum Card, I’m not eligible to apply for this welcome bonus. However, this is overall a negative development if you were looking to get the card and were waiting, as you now have to allocate more spend on the card, spend you could’ve probably put on another card, perhaps to get yet another welcome bonus.

Having said that, you can still earn up to 175,000 points, which is great. However, based on current data points, we’re not seeing a significant chunk of people being targeted for the highest offer.
