The American Express Platinum Card is a card that I’ve carried in my wallet for many years. I first picked up the card back in 2014 when it had an annual fee of $450. Over the years, Amex has refreshed the Amex Platinum Card a couple of times and after its most recent refresh, the card now carries an annual fee of $895, that’s almost 2x of what the fee was when I first picked it up in 2014.

Amex Platinum Card: Retention Bonus Offer

If you’re looking to reach out for a retention offer, then you can either call Amex’s customer service number on the back of your card or reach out to Amex’s customer service via chat. I decided to reach out via chat and here was my opening line.

“I just saw that the annual fee was billed on my card. I’m reaching out to you as I’m unsure about renewing the card. I’ve carried this card in my wallet for many years but I’m just not sure whether I can keep justifying an annual fee increase every 2-3 years. I’d appreciate if you could have a look at my account and help me with this.”

At this point, the customer service rep started talking about some of the travel related benefits that I’ve already used on the card. What I found interesting was that unlike previous retention chats, the rep only focused on the travel related benefits that I’ve use frequently with the card as opposed to simply spelling out a list of the card’s benefits.

The rep started telling me a story about their ‘friend’ who has the Amex Platinum Card

At this point, I mentioned that the credits aren’t really of use to me beyond a point. I mentioned that compared to the annual fee increase, I’m not seeing a tangible increase in benefits that I’d use quite regularly.

At this point, the chat rep finally mentioned that there was no retention offer available.

The Pundit’s Mantra

In the end, I closed the conversation and did not take any action on my card. I plan to try again after a few days. Perhaps, I’ll call in and try my luck. I’ve written before extensively about retention bonuses and how you can approach them. However, like we saw in this case, there’s no guarantee that you will get a retention offer.

Having said that, if you look around at data points, you’ll see that there some interesting retention offers being sent out on the Amex Platinum Card.

Have you recently tried getting a retention offer from Amex? What was that experience like? Tell us in the comments section.
