Yesterday, American Express announced upcoming changes to their Business Gold and Platinum cards. Over the last few years, Amex has been on a product refresh spree, updating many of their products. A common theme during these refreshes has been two fold – an increase in the annual fee and the introduction of partner merchant funded credits split across various time frames. As per the latest press release by American Express, a new ChatGPT credit is coming to the business gold and platinum cards very soon. However, there’s more to the announcement when you dig deeper. Let’s have a look.

Amex Partners With ChatGPT

As per the announcement, the changes will be announced at some point of time during this spring.

NEW $300 ChatGPT Business Credit7 on U.S. Business Platinum and Business Gold Cards: This spring, Amex will introduce the first-of-its-kind ChatGPT Business statement credit on a card, helping Card Members save time and increase productivity. According to an Amex Trendex survey of small business owners, those who use AI say the technology is saving their business time (87%), reducing time spent on manual processes (81%) and improving employee productivity (73%).8

So, what’s going on here? This is not a simple credit for a ChatGPT subscription. This is credit specifically for a Chat GPT Business membership as opposed to an individual membership. Here’s the catch.

If you’re buying a ChatGPT Business Credit subscription, then you have purchase a minimum of 2 seats. At the moment, we don’t know whether the $300 credit just be a flat $300 credit for the calendar year or a $25/month credit each month. If you sign up for the ChatGPT Business Credit and opt for annual billing, then it comes out to $25 per month.

Now, with the annual billing option, you’ll have to shell out a minimum of $600 each year. As you have to purchase a minimum of two seats, you total comes out to $300 x 2 = $600 per year. If that’s the case, then this benefit is effectively a 50% discount for you if you were looking to buy two seats anyway.

The Pundit’s Mantra

At the moment, we don’t know know all the mechanics about this credit and how it would work. We also don’t know if members would be able to split payments across two cards. If that’s the case, then having two cards will help you cover the entire membership for two people. Also, there’s a good chance that Amex could also increase the fee on the Business Gold card after their benefit update in Spring.

As someone who is a Claude Pro user, I’m not very excited about this benefit, especially given the requirement for a two seat minimum. I do have two Business Gold cards though, so I’ll be looking to read through the terms and conditions with a fine tooth comb once all the details are released by Amex some time later in spring.
