The recent refresh of the Amex Platinum Card created a lot of buzz. Some absolutely loved the refresh while others were lamenting how expensive the card has now become. For those who still may be interested in getting the card, you’d love to know that Amex is sending out targeted offers to certain people for offers as high as 175,000 points on the Amex Platinum Card.

Amex Platinum Card: 175,000 Membership Rewards Points Offer

Reddit user AdorableApricot7214 shared this image of a targeted offer by mail. As per the claim by this poster, this is a ‘no lifetime language’ offer since they’ve already had the card in the past. As per the original post, they’ve received an offer for both personal and business versions of the Platinum card.

Why does this matter? Amex usually enforces their ‘once in a lifetime rule.

You may not be eligible to receive a welcome offer if you have or have had this Card, the Platinum Card® from American Express Exclusively for Charles Schwab, the Platinum Card® from American Express Exclusively for Morgan Stanley or previous versions of these Cards. You also may not be eligible to receive a welcome offer based on various factors, such as your history with credit card balance transfers, your history as an American Express Card Member, the number of credit cards that you have opened and closed and other factors. If you are not eligible for a welcome offer, we will notify you prior to processing your application so you have the option to withdraw your application.

In essence, it’s not really a rule that lasts a lifetime. However, Amex’s purpose of adding this to their terms and conditions on card offers is primarily to dissuade people from getting the welcome bonus on the same card or types of cards over and over again. If you look at data points, Amex’s lifetime clock often resets around the 5-7 year mark.

The Pundit’s Mantra

It always helps to check your targeted offers every now and then, be it via mail or in the Amex app or once you log into your account on desktop. If you look at Amex’s public offer after the refresh of the card, it will show it as ‘as high as 175,000 points’. Many were disappointed when they only saw offers of 60,000 or 80,000 points. However, if you’re one of these people who are targeted for 175,000 points, especially if you’ve already had the card in the past, then it’s definitely a juicy offer to jump on right away.

I currently carry the Charles Schwab version of the Amex Platinum Card in my wallet and plan to keep it open as the card works very well with  my style of travel.
