Review: The lovely Aegean Airlines lounge in Thessaloniki

Aegean Airlines operates their own lounge at Thessaloniki Airport. As they are the country’s main operator, this should not be at all surprising to anyone.

Since I am Silver in the Miles + Bonus frequent flyer programme, I was able to use one of my lounge passes to gain access. The lounge is located at ground level, so it’s downstairs from the main departures level in the terminal.

Aegean’s Thessaloniki Lounge

Once admitted, I found the lounge to be very nice. Ample light came in through the floor to ceiling windows looking out to the apron. Being on ground level didn’t detract from the experience, in fact it reminded me of Cathay Pacific’s The Pier First Class lounge in Hong Kong which is also ground level.

The space is divided into several areas. There is a place filled with dining tables, a lounge relaxation area, a work area and of course the food area. It works well and I found the space to be the perfect size for the amount of people using it.

Food and Drink

I visited in the morning before 9am, so it was a breakfast selection on offer. The three hot options were extremely similar, as you will see below. That being said, there were plenty of other things to choose, from Bagels to Yoghurts to Fruit to Pasta.

Overall, the selection was satisfying and thoughtfully chosen as opposed to trying to cater for everyone. Is there a need for bacon, eggs, sausages and all of that kind of thing? Probably not. I’d eaten at my hotel beforehand, so snacky little bits were perfect here.

A word about boarding!

The real USP of this lounge is that every Aegean flight boards from here. No, that doesn’t mean everyone traipses downstairs to board. It means that there is a separate priority bus for the lounge people to the plane. “Priority bus?!”, you might shriek, “Not a peasant wagon, surely?”.

Well, everyone takes a bus at Thessaloniki Airport because there are no aerobridges at the terminal. Therefore, it’s the bus or nothing and honestly boarding from the lounge is still very excellent, even if the business class bus is identical to all the others.

Overall Thoughts

I was really pleased with the Aegean Airlines lounge in Thessaloniki. Each time a flight was called, the lounge would empty almost completely, which is why I was able to get photos without people in them. The locals seem to have the whole airport experience down pat.

With an acceptable amount of food and drink on offer, comfortable seating and plenty of natural light, I was quite happy. It’s not a destination lounge by any means, but it does the job.

    1. Thank you! I got lucky when the lounge became empty after a flight was called – makes it so much simpler! 🙂

  1. Looks quite nice, rather like the Lufthansa lounge in ATH but with worse tequila (hopefully not a factor before breakfast). I am a bit surprised that the entire airport doesn’t have any jetways.

    1. I’ve not been to the LH lounge in ATH, but makes sense. Haha – I didn’t have the tequila, no. Agreed, I thought it would have jetways, but it’s buses for all!
