What’s Aegean Airlines economy class like from London Heathrow to Athens?

As part of my quest for Star Alliance Gold, I needed to fly Aegean Airlines economy class. I did put in an upgrade request with a coupon I received when I made Silver in Aegean’s Miles+Bonus programme, but alas that was not approved.

That meant another three or four hours sitting with a stranger millimeters away from me. Luckily she turned out to be friendly enough, which makes all the difference.

Terminal 2 at Heathrow

I arrived from Dublin on Aer Lingus into Terminal 2. As the Aegean flight leaves quite late, there was nobody in transfer security, so I had the place pretty much all to myself. Since I had no lounge access, I waited in the terminal until it was time to board.

Priority boarding was enforced at London Heathrow, in stark contrast to Athens, London Gatwick and Thessaloniki. A lady checked each boarding pass before letting people into the queue, so that worked well.

Aegean Airlines Economy Class

When you board an Aegean Airlines flight, the crew greet you with a cheerful “Yassas!” and you can select a sweet from the basket they hold. It’s all very friendly! Once you get in to the cabin proper, the antimacassars on the seats give a really nice and jaunty impression.

Boarding completed on time and I was surprised to find the flight was completely full. It seems the 22:15 departure was not putting anyone off their trip to Greece!

Dinner Time

Once in the air, the crew didn’t waste any time in getting out the meals. Happily passengers in Aegean Airlines economy class are treated to a hot meal with salad. I selected the pasta with chicken meatballs, because I’d had some delicious chicken meatballs when flying business class the month previously.

The meal was perfectly fine, and I finished all of it. You can’t beat a crunchy and tasty salad, some pasta and some chicken meatballs! Well, maybe you can, but not in economy class. Later on we received cookies for a snack and the crew came through offering water a couple of times. I mostly snoozed the rest of the flight (it was late!) and we landed in Athens without further ado.

Overall Thoughts

As you can see, the flight from London Heathrow to Athens is virtually the same as my flight from London Gatwick to Athens the month previously. It’s excellent to see there is no difference in the on board offering, even though the airports are different and cater to alternative sets of customers.

For a four hour flight that cost not a lot more than a hundred Euro, you can’t really go wrong. Seats are as comfortable as you’d expect, the crew were nice – all good as far as I am concerend.

What do you think about Aegean Airlines economy class? Is it the best in Europe as some people say? Thank you for reading and if you have any comments or questions, please leave them below.
