Well, apparently today is World Chocolate Day – didn’t know that was a thing (Happy Chocolate Day!). I came across this statistic that really blew my mind. When we write about business class flights and luxury hotels, we often talk about opulence. In this case, it seems like the more opulent the experience, the more customers are likely to indulge in something sweet.

Happy Chocolate Day – Emirates’ Customers ate 60 Million Chocolates Last Year

As per this report, Emirates’ customers enjoyed a whopping 60 Million chocolates over the last year, marking an increase of 2 Million chocolates over the previous year. Here’s an interesting breakdown:

  • Customers in Economy Class consumed 36.6 Million Chocolates
  • Customers in their newly launched Premium Economy class consumed 1.06 Million Chocolates
  • In Business Class, customers enjoyed 9.1 Million Chocolates
  • First Class customers enjoyed well over 13.4 Million Chocolates

Given the few number of seats in First and Business, it’s no surprise that people traveling in those premium classes ‘indulged’ more than their peers in Economy class.

The Chocolate Fix

Emirates really caters to their customers’ sweet cravings in premium cabins. They partner with closely with connoisseur chocolatiers globally to help customers enjoy a curated experience.

Across all classes, Emirates customers craving a chocolate fix can also enjoy chocolate desserts and hot chocolate from the menu. In First Class, delicious desserts for customers include the popular pistachio and chocolate mousse cake with pistachio praline, as well as warm chocolate fondant served with a dollop of raspberry coulis and mascarpone cream, and vegan chocolate tart dashed with a tangy apricot compote and vanilla quenelle.

In Business Class, customers can indulge in a vegan onyx avocado chocolate tart or a creamy banana mango and milk chocolate dome, or chocolate mocha marquise wedge, drizzled in salted caramel. In Premium Economy, customers can treat themselves to desserts like chocolate mousse cake with a passion fruit core, served with strawberry sauce, while in Economy Class, customers can finish their meal with a rich chocolate mousse smothered in classic crème anglaise

The Pundit’s Mantra

While all that’s great. Emirates hasn’t necessarily left a sweet taste in some customers’ mouths with their recent devaluation, bringing down their transfer ratio from Amex by 20%.

While I’m a big fan of dark chocolates myself, I don’t see myself choosing a particular airline over the other based on their chocolate offerings. However, if you already fly Emirates and have a sweet tooth, then these chocolates offer a great way to indulge at 30,000 feet.
