When it comes to credit cards that charge very annual fees, one always has a tendency to think twice once the renewal date comes up and the annual fee posts. Retention offers on premium credit cards often create quite a buzz as they help cardholders renew their expensive credit cards either at some discount or give them some extra bonus points. One such thread documenting offers on the Chase Sapphire Reserve caught my eye. A couple of months back, I wrote about this data point showing a nice $400 statement credit as a retention offer on the Chase Sapphire Reserve.

Chase Sapphire Reserve Retention Bonuses: 2026 Data Points

Bear in mind that when it comes to retention offers, there’s no guarantee. The issuer has no obligation to offer you a retention bonus. It’s often based on a myriad of factors like their current budget, your spend on the card or the length of time you’ve kept the card open. Sometimes, you’ll see instances when someone ticks all the boxes but still doesn’t receive an offer. On the other hand, someone who doesn’t tick any of the boxes comes out with a sweet retention bonus. In essence, it’s a massive YMMV (your mileage may vary) situation.

As per recent Reddit reports, you’ll see that there’s one more data point of another person having received the $400 statement credit. That’s a massive 50% discount for a card that charges an annual fee of $795. Here’s a quick sample of some of the data points:

  • heaton5747: “Called Chase as today is the renewal (amount has not posted yet) and directly asked for a retention offer for my CSR. Was immediately offered a $400 statement credit to post within 1-2 statements if I let the card renew. Not a long conversation at all.”
  • les9097: “My fee is posting today and I just called and was offered $100, bummer.”
  • Ok-Significance9545: “My renewal is today, got excited from this thread and called in and the agent said “oh good news I found an offer for you!” but it was just a 1.25 pt redemption value with my existing points to pay the fee. ” Eventually got a $150 statement credit.
  • AlfiesMother: I called early January to cancel, and the lady talked me into keeping it for another month so I could use my benefits (dining, Apple Music, etc). So, I did. I called back a couple days ago to cancel because my annual fee hits at the beginning of this month, and the lady offered me the $400 credit. So, I kept it.
  • superman1020:I was spending $100k and they offered $100. Bye!!!

The Pundit’s Mantra

If you read the thread, you’ll see a few trends. Firstly, there are a couple of data points about the $400 retention offer but they’re rare, you need to be lucky. However, there are a couple more offers that are more common.

Firstly, a common bonus offered here is a flat $100 statement credit. The second offer that shows up frequently is the offer to redeem your points at a 1.25 cpp value and pay the annual fee. In essence, Chase is telling cardmembers that they can pay 63,600 Chase Ultimate Rewards points to pay the $795 annual fee, which in my opinion, is a bad deal.

Have you tried getting a retention offer on the Chase Sapphire Reserve after the annual fee increase? What was the experience like? Tell us in the comments seciton.
