3 Trips I Look Forward to Most in 2020

We had a good travel year in 2019. My daughter and I enjoyed exploring Buenos Aires followed by a few days in both Colonia del Sacramento and Montevideo, Uruguay. Here’s a full recap of that adventure. A couple months later I took my older son to Taipei, Taiwan, followed by an interesting day in Xiamen, China on an extended layover.

Summer brought a father-son trip to Chicago and Detroit, followed by a trip with my daughter to New Mexico where we had a blast in Albuquerque and enjoyed seeing the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Taos Pueblo.

All those adventures in the bag. Yet we have more ahead! Here’s what in on the agenda for 2020:

A Week in London With My Older Kids

We’ll start the year with a bang with an overseas trip to London. It’s been over a decade since I last visited Great Britain, and I’m very much looking forward to returning. The plan is to currently see London, although I’m kicking around the idea of blasting up to Belfast for a day to visit the friends my daughter and I made in Buenos Aires.

January might seem like an odd time to visit London, given the cold temperatures. But we couldn’t beat the deal, especially considering that we saved another $100 on the kids tickets by avoiding the UK air passenger duty.

Solo Trip to Seoul and Shanghai

I like to take a couple solo trips per year, and the big one is certainly going to be this whirlwind adventure to Seoul and Shanghai. I caught a great deal on a one-way Delta Premium Select cabin, booked as a revenue far with points, that will help me net status for the year, as I missed this year’s qualification.

The outbound is a Korean Air ticket, booked with 85,000 Delta SkyMiles. This might sound insane, but I am flying from San Francisco to Seoul via Atlanta. Why? To be able to experience the upper deck of a 747, of course! This will be a first on three different counts, as it’ll be my first trip with Korean Airlines and first trip flying on a 747-8i. I’m already excited. Yes, there was space on a Korean 777 from SFO to ICN, but I like this idea better.

(Yet Unplanned) Father-Son Weekend

After visiting Mark Ostermann of Miles to Memories and his kids this past summer, we decided that we’d get together again sometime this year. The most likely opportunity will be this fall. Some of the destinations tossed out include Denver, St. Louis, and eastern Tennessee. Mark is trying to visit every single ballpark, so it’s possible we end up heading to a baseball game with him and his son.

I’m sure what we’ll end up planning, but I know it’ll be a great trip. Our visit to Detroit was a blast!

Conclusion

There’s certainly more on the calendar, including some weekends in the Bay Area, a visit to New Orleans for a miles and points meetup, and a potential father-daughter trip in the late spring. But these are the travels I’m looking forward to most.

What are your travel plans for the coming year? Which trip are you looking forward to most?
