Hotel Review: Courtyard New York Manhattan/Midtown West

Background:

For a two night visit to New York City, I tried finding a hotel with 2 Queen Beds as they are more comfortable when sharing with a family. That is a harder feat to accomplish in New York City as the smaller rooms normally mean that you’ll be stuck with Double (Full) Sized Beds. I stumbled on the Courtyard New York Manhattan/Midtown West which is a newer property having just opened at the end of 2019. They offered 2 Queen Beds in their rooms, and the hotel looked modern and nice for a Courtyard, so I was sold. Rates for my stay were about $250 per night.

Arrival + Amenities:

Having just got off the red eye, we weren’t expecting the room to necessarily be ready when we arrived at 10am. The front desk associate was friendly, but stated that no rooms with 2 Queens were available. She told us to come back at 1:30pm for a room to be available. Sadly, no rooms were available until 3pm which is the standard check in time. I ended up heading back to the hotel before 1:30pm and just waited in the lobby. A bunch of other guests were patiently sitting in the lobby too, and I bet they were all told to come back at 1:30pm. A bit of a negative, as the representative shouldn’t have over-promised and under-delivered. On the positive side, all the staff members we encountered were very friendly though.

Additionally, the lobby looked more upscale than your average Courtyard.

There was also additional seating one level below the lobby, and this is also where the in house fast casual/restaurant Catria is located which is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

The hotel also has a fitness center with Peloton but I did not have a chance to visit the center.

The Location:

The location of the property is quite convenient for Manhattan. It’s steps away from the Hudson Yards development which has a subway stop, and less than a half a mile to Penn Station. If you’re a first time visitor and want to see Times Square, that is less than a mile away and the famous Macy’s at Herald Square is 0.6 miles away.

The Room:

At 3pm we got the keys to the room and were assigned a room on the 11th floor. The rooms are on the smaller side at 300 square feet but that is expected in New York City. For a Courtyard, the room looked nicer than expected.

There was a desk area with a spinny chair, and a 55 inch television.

The beds were quite comfortable and solid, and pillows were of good quality. The AC also worked well in the summer heat so overall I got a solid night’s sleep. Obviously, with newer builds there was a decent amount of hallway noise but the AC was able to help drown it out.

Additionally, there’s a mini-fridge for personal use, and tea and coffee were provided. In room technology was good, with plenty of charging ports and USB ports. Slippers were even provided in the closet, which I would not expect for a domestic Courtyard to offer.

The Bathroom:

It was modern and clean, but I really did not like the sink. The faucet and basin were both quite small and the faucet was at a weird angle. On the bright side, there was ample counter space due to the small sink. But, I would gladly trade some of the counter real estate for a larger sink.

The shower drained fine which was good, but unfortunately the water pressure was a bit on the lower side. And the toiletries were a bit on the basic side; I would wish they seemed a bit nicer. Plus the hand bar soap turned into a weird mush after a few uses.

The Verdict:

Overall, my stay at the Courtyard New York Manhattan Midtown West was good as the location was convenient for my needs this trip and the new rooms with queen beds were a definite plus. The bathroom could use some improvements, and given the vast amount of properties in New York City, I would probably opt to try a different property on my future visits, but this property is a decent choice!
