Top Credit Cards to Use When Shopping at Nordstrom and Other Retailers

Not all credit cards are created equal. Some are great for travel while others a great for retail therapy. What makes a card perfect for shopping comes down to how you’ll earn rewards and any added benefits offered to cardholders. Benefits that are important when shopping, whether it be online or in-store, include extended warranties and purchase protection. Here are some of the best credit cards to use when shopping at major retailers.

Discover It Miles Card

Discover is probably best known for its Discover it cash back card. The Discover it card is one of the best cash back credit cards available. This is especially true for those that are just getting started with credit cards. However, Discover also offers a travel rewards credit card that earns miles.

The aptly named Discover it Miles credit card currently comes with a welcome bonus that’s similar to Discover’s Cashback Match. With the Discover it Miles card, it’s the miles you earn in the first year you have your card that will be matched. For example, if you earn 30,000 miles in the first year you have your card, you will end up with 60,000 miles thanks to this welcome bonus.

Additionally, the Discover it Miles card allows cardholders to convert their miles into cash. You can convert miles into cash back, a statement credit, or at checkout when you checkout using PayPal. This benefit is particularly useful for online shoppers.

The Platinum Card from American Express

The Platinum Card from American Express is best known for its luxe travel benefits. However, The Platinum Card also comes with a suite of other benefits. This includes an extended warranty on eligible purchases, $100 annual Saks Fifth Avenue statement credit, return protection, and purchase protection.

Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card

The Chase Sapphire Preferred Card is a fantastic card for both everyday purchases and travel. At the moment, the card also comes with a phenomenal welcome bonus. The Chase Sapphire Preferred Card earns 1x at retailers but 2x points on dining and travel. Shoppers can enjoy some peace of mind thanks to added benefits including purchase protection and extended warranty protection.

Citi® Double Cash Card

Citi’s Double Cash Card is a solid and well-rounded card. The Citi Double Cash card offers cardholders unlimited double cash back. Cardholders earn 1% cash back when they make a purchase and another 1% when they make a payment. This makes the Citi Double Cash Card especially valuable for retail and everyday purchases. You can also transfer the cash back you earn to Citi ThankYou points which also makes this card great for travel.

Should I Use Points for Store Gift Cards?

Most major credit card rewards programs allow cardholders to covert their points or miles into gift cards. For example, American Express allows cardholders to redeem Membership Rewards for gift cards at retailers like Home Depot, Best Buy, Sam’s Club, and Target. Nordstrom is also included in this robust lineup of retailers. However, redeeming points or miles for gift cards is rarely a good idea.

For example, if you were to redeem Membership Rewards points for a $100 Nordstrom gift card, you would need 11,765 points. This would value your Membership Rewards points at less than a cent per point. As a point of comparison, Membership Rewards points are valued at around 2.41 cents per point. That being said, a $100 Nordstrom gift card is not a great use of almost 12,000 points.

This tends to be the case across all major credit cards. There are some exceptions. For example, Discover’s line of cash back cards provided a 1:1 transfer ratio. At the same time, you will then be limiting the value of your cash back when redeeming cash back for a store-specific gift card. That being said, unless you can’t think of a better use of your points, we don’t recommend redeeming points or miles for gift cards.

The Bottom Line

Nordstrom’s Anniversary Sale will run until the end of the day on August 8th. It’s at this time that all Anniversary Sale items return to their original price. So, if you’re looking for a new carry-on or other luggage, now’s the time to stock up. This year’s Anniversary Sale features luggage and travel accessories from brands like Tumi and Briggs & Riley among many others.

Additionally, remember to use the right card at checkout. Some credit cards are better suited for shopping at major retailers than others.

Do you plan on making any purchases during this year’s Anniversary Sale? What card do you use when shopping at major retailers?
