Would I like to buy this airport control tower and live in it? Yes. That’s all I have to say about this. Yes. It has two things I would love, views over an operational airport and sea views. It’s even just 10 minutes walk from a surf beach.

The airport in question has a brand new control tower, so the old one is being sold off. It is a residential property and hopefully some amazing architect will make it into a dream home.

So Where Is This Control Tower?

Touted as the only airport control tower in the world with a street address and letterbox, this bad boy is located in Wellington, New Zealand. Opened in 1959, it served the airport all the way through to 2018.

The official address is 34-36 Tirangi Road, Rongotai, 6022 and they’re taking enquiries at over NZ$895,000 for the 940m2 site. That price comes to €502,000 or £453,500 or US$597,000, in case you are wondering.

Unfortunately for aviation geeks, it is expected the site will be sold and developers will build houses on the land. That would be a shame, but that’s the commercial reality of it.

Apparently airport staff refer to the tower as “The Grand Old Lady of Wellington” while locals refer to it as “Arnold”. Don’t ask me why, but so it goes. You can check out the listing on Tommy’s Real Estate’s web site right here.

Overall Thoughts

It has to be said that a control tower would make a pretty damned cool house. The possibilities are endless really, though the wonderful views from the top would be the main feature.

Would you buy an airport control tower? Have any others around the world been converted into something cool that you know of? Thank you for reading and if you have any comments or questions, please leave them below.
